No, the Moon Won't Turn Green on Wednesday
space.com ^

Posted on 04/18/2016 11:41:39 AM PDT by BenLurkin

To go along with the infamous "Mars hoax," which claims that the Red Planet will appear as large as the full moon in the sky; the "Nibiru cataclysm," a supposed disastrous encounter between Earth and a large planetary object; and "Zero-Gravity Day," when people on Earth supposedly can experience weightlessness, we now have the "nights of the green moon."

This latest fallacy to sweep the blogosphere claims that on Wednesday (April 20), and again on May 29, the moon will appear to turn a shade of green. The full moon of April will occur on Friday, April 22.

The explanation given for the verdant metamorphosis is that several planets are going to align (wrong!), causing the moon to glow with an eerie, greenish light for about 90 minutes. This spectacle is exceedingly rare (so we are told), and last took place way back in the year 1596. As has been the case with the bogus Mars, Nibiru and zero-gravity hoaxes, the green-moon message implores you to "share this event!" And sadly, many people have apparently been snookered into doing just that.

Is this hoax from the same people who brought us the Climate Change scam?

But isn’t the moon made of green cheese?

But isn’t the moon made of green cheese?

It wasn't originally green. Somebody left it out of the refrigerator too long and . . .

It is astounding what people simply accept as truth.

I saw the one about weightlessness on my FB stream at least 60 times.

It rates tight up there with “Type Wow and share and see what happens!”

People, NOTHING happens except another gullible person falls for a cheap trick to get their stupid prank shared.

The Jupiter Effect is a 1974 book by John Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann, in which they predicted that an alignment of the planets of the Solar System would create a number of catastrophes, including a great earthquake on the San Andreas Fault, on March 10, 1982. The book became a best-seller.[1] The predicted catastrophes did not occur

Earthquakes, Plate Tectonics, Earth Structure

Can the position of the moon or the planets affect seismicity? Are there more earthquakes in the morning/in the evening/at a certain time of the month?

The moon, sun, and other planets have an influence on the earth in the form of perturbations (small changes) to the gravitational field. The relative amount of influence is proportional to the objects mass, and inversely proportional to the third power of its distance from the earth.

The stresses induced in the earth by an extraterrestrial mass are proportional to the gravitational field gradient dg( r ) / dr

and NOT to the gravitational field g( r ). g( r ) = GMm / r^2

thus: dg( r ) / dr = -2 * g( r ) / r = -2GMm / r^3

Many studies in the past have shown no significant correlations between the rate of earthquake occurrence and the semi-diurnal tides when using large earthquake catalogs.

Several recent studies, however, have found a correlation between earth tides (caused by the position of the moon relative to the earth) and some types of earthquakes.

One study, for example, concludes that during times of higher earth and ocean tides, such as during times of full or new moon, earthquakes are more likely on shallow thrust faults near the edges of continents and in (underwater) subduction zones. Lunar or solar eclipses represent, of course, special cases of full and new moon, but do not cause any special or different tidal effects from full and new moon. Earth tides (Earth’s surface going up and down by a couple of centimeters) and especially ocean tides (surface of the ocean going up and down by a meter or more) raise and lower the confining pressure on shallow, dipping faults near continental edges and in subduction zones. When the confining pressure is lessened, the faults are unclamped and more likely to slip. The increased probability is a factor of ~3 during high tides. But you must stop and realize that the background probability is, in general, very low in a given place and year (fractions of a percent), so that raising this tiny probability by a factor of 3 during high tides still results in a very tiny probability.

There have also been some small but significant correlations reported between the semi-diurnal tides and the rate of occurrence of aftershocks in some volcanic regions, such as Mammoth Lakes.

However, earthquakes are equally as likely to occur in the morning or the evening.

(From UC Berkeley with contributions from Gary Fuis)

Hahaha! One of my brothers-in-law keeps posting pictures of the green moon on FB, and none of my family, not even me, has the guts to tell him he’s been punked.

Would be pretty cool, though, if it happened. :)

The supposed explanation was that the moon would be just 4 degrees from the green-hued planet Uranus in the sky, and would somehow acquire a green sheen from the close interaction.

So the moon is going to turn green from being 4 degrees from Uranus? Makes sense to me!
