My non opus, opus
May 2, 2016 | Shotgun

Posted on 05/02/2016 1:24:41 PM PDT by shotgun

What has happened to the Free Republic that I can’t break away from? You know the one where you knew something big was happening in the world because you couldn’t open the site because of too much traffic (late 90’s)? The one that where you read articles that were of great interest on science, religion, or the bizarro? The one where you would have to don a flame retardant suit if you posted something that was outside the thought prevailing thought process of the other posters? I long for those days as I am sure many of us do as well as those that left. I don’t particularly care for the bulk of the political posting but, like watching television, have decided not to open them up rather than throw in the towel and leave the site. Yet I’m still here waiting for those days to return, checking in every 15 minutes for earth shaking news. These days will pass albeit slower than I like and so too will this election cycle. Interesting times are ahead…

“War is the continuation of politics by other means. It can therefore be said that politics is war without bloodshed while war is politics with bloodshed.”

“The compulsion to isolate, insult, and demean people WE NORMALLY LIKE AND SUPPORT just because they support a different candidate is childish.”

It is also Alinsky-esque in its impact and indiscernible from—and provides cover for—actual opposition trolls.

Why?

Because the truth matters and because conservatives will have an even bigger mess to clean up after the looming November disaster. Conservatives will be able to be heard then after the politician addicts and, to some extent, the politicians themselves have stuffed a rag in it and stopped embarrassing the USA or at least lowered the volume.

When the hearts of the remaining enthusiasts for this politician or that have been broken and trampled by the shocking discovery that the lies were lies and the whimpering and bitter recriminations of those who thought they had won begins, we can ignore their pain and ours go back to what we will still need to do, stubbornly and unyieldingly advance against both major whorehouse divisions of the uniparty the permanent things: morality, capitalism, guns, babies, watching the ineptitude of the political class and the ignorant and rude temper tantrums of their supporters, raging against the continued attacks on Western Civilization by ISIS (the enemy without) and SCOTUS (the enemy within) alike and both "political parties."

Ideas and principles matter. All else is transitory crapola. I am too old and poor and ill to move to Andorra or the west coast of Ireland. Hence I will live here until I die. For all the things that matter, we (I and others like me) will carry on until we die. Stay with us. We lived through Nixon vs. McGovern, through the Red Diaper Baby election of 1974, the ongoing treason of the GOP-E against all things conservative, Ford vs. Carter, Read My Lips vs. Snoopy in a Tank, Read My Lips vs. Slick Willie, Slick Willie vs. The Tax Collector for the Welfare State, Dubya vs. Alsnore, Dubya vs. Traitor John, Comrade Imam Obozo vs. Captain Queeg and Comrade Imam Obozo vs. the Moral Monster who was by far the worst in the entire history of the GOP, trafficking in and profiting from disposing of the broken little corpses of abortion victims. We got through those. We'll get through this.

We have much work to do and a future to build.

Bible study groups seem to work for many Christians to focus their minds on the things that really matter. Maybe Bible studies and, patterned after them, other study groups on lesser subjects, combined with civilized debate among ourselves and with respectable (yes there is such a thing) opponents to our left and regular community forums with speakers (ours and those of respectable liberals) with opportunity for audience questions and responses, particularly for young people to counter the Marxist and atheist propaganda of their P.S. 666 "schools."

We could and should encourage people to read the six related novels of Alan Drury that started with Advice and Consent and ended with Come Nineveh, Come Tyre, and even see the brilliant film of Advise and Consent;

and the works of Ludwig von Mises (On Socialism, On Bureaucracy, The Anti-Capitalist Mentality, A Theory of History, etc.), the really ambitious students above my pay grade can tackle his Human Action, Friedrich von Hayek (particularly The Road to Serfdom), Milton Friedman (Capitalism and Freedom), Thomas Sowell (just about anything), and Walter Williams;

and such conservative classics as Witness by Whittaker Chambers, McCarthy and His Enemies by Bill Buckley and L. Brent Bozell, God and Man at Yale by Bill Buckley, most anything else in non-fiction by Bill Buckley, Richard Weaver's Ideas Have Consequences, James Burnham's Suicide of the West, Will Herberg's Protestant, Catholic and Jew, Frank Meyer's In Defense of Freedom, and (with caveats as to her militant atheism and personal amorality) Ayn Rand's Anthem and Atlas Shrugged and We the Living;

and to familiarize ourselves and them with the creative policy proposals of the late Jack Kemp and with the concepts of independent academies, religious and not, and homeschooling to replace the utter inferiority and ignorance fostered by Common Core not only of PS 666 but even today's parochial schools;

and to study and understand and enforce our near absolute 2nd Amendment RIGHT to keep and bear arms; to study relevant legal decisions, good and bad, in light of the Constitution as written on guns, babies, marriage, the meaning of the 14th Amendment vs. the actual text of that Amendment;

and to confront the exceedingly difficult question of whether the Tenth Amendment can EVER be restored and, if so, how to soften the disaster that would threaten those dependent on sooooo many unconstitutional fedprograms (Social Security, Medicare, Obozocare, Medicaid, HUD, HHS, Edjumakashun Department, federal student loans, subsidies to "higher education," Department of Commerce, Department of Labor, Department of Energy, import/export bank, foreign aid, much of the Injustice Department, much of State as well, BATF (other than if transformed into an unregulated and untaxed convenience store chain without record-keeping) and so many, many more;

and what to do with the colossal amounts of money no longer allowed to be spent by the fedthieves (tax cuts, abolished programs, let 50 state flowers bloom in genuine creative federalism and competition, etc.?);

and how to restore the quite necessary and quite constitutional strength of our military to be led not by some alternative lifestyle menagerie but by actual blooded veterans;

and how to outlaw abortion under a "personhood" analysis of the 14th Amendment;

and creating a genuine grassroots and well-informed conservative movement throughout the nation, state by state, county by county, town by town, school by school, street by street and house by house, spanning all generations, men and women and students old enough and talented enough to contribute, encouraging writing skills and speaking skills and actual scholarship not just the monetary kind but also the kind that leads to knowledge and wisdom and persuasive skill, all races and nationalities of ancestry (freedom and morals are good for everyone and are everyone's job) and levels of income (the poor have the most to gain once pried loose from the plantation oppression of the welfare state).

and sending our youth to programs of Morton Blackwell's Leadership Institute to learn political and election organizing strategy and tactics. Morton is OUR Saul Alinsky.

AND re-creating some college and high school groups in the mold of groups of yesteryear such as Young Americans for Freedom, College Republicans and Young Republicans as they were forty years ago: i.e. genuinely CONSERVATIVE and well informed and politically skilled shock troops for the CONSERVATIVE movement and for America's Future.

Familiarizing our youth with such resources as the Foundation for Economic Education, the Intercollegiate Society of Individualists; the Acton Institute, the John Ashbrook Institute, Hillsdale College, the other reliably conservative schools, and also, for those most talented and best informed Ivy League schools, all of which have such institutions as Yale's Party of the Right of the Yale Political Union, which put our young in direct intellectual combat against every talented fruit, nut and vegetable comprising what we should call THEM.

Create our own parent-controlled grammar and high schools, curricula and credentialing systems and ultimately accredited online colleges and sink or swim on the superior education they deliver using texts like the following examples:

American History; The late Harvard professor of American History and official US Navy Historian of WW II (49 volumes on that project) Samuel Eliot Morison's even-handed Oxford History of the American People, formerly the standard text for Harvard history majors; FReeper Larry Schweikert's (LS) Patriot's History of the United States, Paul Johnson's History of the American People. Also James Robertson's Stonewall, Shelby Foote's The Civil War---A Narrative; just about anything by David McCullough, The Interest of America in Sea Power, Present and Future by Alfred Thayer Mahan. American Caesar by William Manchester.

Ancient History: Herodotus; Tacitus; Thucydides; Flavius Josephus; Petrarch, appropriate volumes of Will and Ariel Durant's History of Civilization and especially anything by retired Dean of Yale College Donald Kagan. .

European History: Paul Johnson's Modern Times; Donald Kagan, Stephen Ozment, and others The Western Heritage (2 vols. oversized paperback);

Mathematics: John Saxon's entire magnificent series of volumes from about fifth grade through calculus, one volume per year. Brilliant methodology. The best of the best. Hated by incompetent and lazy gummint skewel teachers everywhere but not the rare competent and diligent ones.

Biology, Chemistry, Physics: All necessary but I am a scientific illiterate and will leave text recommendations in those disciplines to those more competent in science (that would be almost anyone) than I.

Latin: standard texts by Fr. Robert Henle (four year's volumes plus a grammar; or Janney (four volumes) or Wheelock (I am less familiar); Julius Caesar's Gallic War; Cicero's Orations; Cicero's Essays; Virgil's Aeneid, Horace, Ovid.

Greek: A good grammar, syntax vocabulary series; and Xenophon's Anabasis.

British Literature: A good anthology plus: Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Anthony Trollope, Dorothy Sayers, J. R. R. Tolkien, Charles Williams, C. S. Lewis, others.

American Literature: A good anthology and Henry David Thoreau's Civil Disobedience, short stories by O. Henry and by William Saroyan, William Saroyan, Novels of William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Walker Percy, Flannery O'Connor, Mark Twain, Taylor Caldwell (popular but I think she was great), James Michener (likewise), James Clavell Shogun and just about anything else (ditto) and others.

The Bible, preferably King James or Douay Rheims translations (Anglican Protestant and Catholic respectively).

Catholicism and/or other Christianity: Anything by Venerable Bishop Fulton J. Sheen but particularly his Life of Christ, anything by the late Fr. Malachi Martin and particularly The Final Conclave, Windswept House and The Keys of This Blood, Frank Schaeffer's books, Lee Strobel's Case for Christ, most of C. S. Lewis.

Not only are we not "Gone with the Wind," but there is a hurricane of Biblical proportions building that will hit right after this disgrace of an election is over---no matter who wins, a genuinely textured conservative hurricane that promises to be a Level 6 extinction event for those determined to superficialize our society and its politics. As populist as Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders but as principled and permanently and ideologically conservative as Patrick Henry and Andrew Jackson and Calvin Coolidge and Jack Kemp. As competent and accomplished as Scott Walker but dependent never on transitory personalities.

It is only about six more months of wading through the slime that is this Godforsaken campaign. We have done it before. We will do it again. No time to jump ship.

When Whittaker Chambers abandoned his long time subservience to communism, to attack communism and Stalin and Alger Hiss and his other former comrades, he observed that he was like a rat climbing aboard a sinking ship. I'm no rat. Neither are you and, in their heart of hearts, neither are most here. Can we do less than Chambers?

May God bless you and yours and everyone on Free Republic even those with whom I disagree from time to time!

The flame wars are dying. Finally.

Well of course they are, most of the vocal Cruz guys have gotten the banhammer or a short vacation, and the nonvocal Cruz supporters have just stopped hanging out.

Which is funny, cause the obvious Trump trolls haven't even been touched, like RevWhatever@aol.com or BFAC... I understand it's JimRob's prerogative, but letting trolls like that hang around, while zotting some longtime members (2DV Vet), just doesn't make me want to hang around that much. The anti-Cruz vitriol is astounding, as well as the ridiculous pro-Trumpness. I understand Trump as a no-better-alternative option, but considering his past and the huge (yuge?) cult of personality, I can't believe how pro-Trump much of FR has become. It is 10x worse than the Glock fanbois or Swordmaker and his Mac guys. (No offense to SM on this. On a side note, pinged him as curious about his political leanings here...?)

I’d give the nod to the Richard and make them go with the rest of the Richards.

Oh please. If I was in charge around the world, things would be waaaaay different than they are now!

Where did your long hair go
Where is the girl I used to know

Caroline changed according to Brian Wilson, and FR changed according to shotgun.

I have seen a lot of posts like this, but in my nearly 18 years aboard, it always seems
about the same to me, the same mix of politics, religion, and eclectic interesting posts.
I know I always feel jolted when the site goes down!

There has never been a fully functional male and female in the same human body ever documented.

That is correct, but they do possess both sexual organs, in appearance at least, and indeed they do self identify as one sex or the other. That is why they call it gender confusion, as well as, hermaphrodite. So born at birth with what appears to be female genitalia and raised as a girl only to find out later that they are really a male, or vice versa. You see I do have compassion for these people, as I am sure most people do for those truly affected by this medical abnormality. They are not the ones that present a danger. It's the pretenders that will seek to take advantage and become predators that present the real problem and dangers.

That is what makes life difficult. Everything is not just black or white. There are a lot of gray areas as well. How do we handle these gray areas while still providing the highest possible protection to women and children, this is the dilemma. Three separate bathrooms? Of course that then puts an additional burden on businesses, and affects the smaller business the hardest. Then when it comes to schools and shower/locker rooms the additional burden is placed on tax payers.

Anyway, this whole part of the discussion was brought about when the scenario of both organs being present and which bathroom should those people use. A valid question indeed, and the answer is not a simple one.

My form of historical preservation. My doctors perform a different version of same sometimes miraculously.

Perhaps linguistic archaeologists will someday discover and peruse my posts and use all those references to create a new and conservative civilization on the ruins of our own.

I'm pinging sunken civilization, calling his attention to #106 and invite him to try.

You keep saying that, but what's really happening is that you're whistling past the graveyard.

It's overwhelmingly the opinion of GOP voters that there should be no contested convention this cycle. That's why they're collectively taking steps to ensure that.

Contested conventions occur when there are two candidates with very close delegate totals, such as in 1976, the most recent GOP contested convention (40 years ago).

That is not the case this time. As Newt Gingrich has pointed out, Ted Cruz's talk of winning a contested convention is sheer fantasy.

It simply will not realistically occur. Thus it is Cruz who is over-reacting to the mathematical realities at play. He looks more clownish with each move of the goal posts.

“It is a myth”

You started out talking about a “genuine hermaphrodite”, then you changed the subject to who and who is not a “true hermaphrodite”, and now you are trying to claim a “true hermaphrodite” is a myth and does not exist because there are no documented cases of being self impregnated. Those comments are wrong and represent a strawman argument, because you are misrepresenting the definition of an hermaphrodite as requiring self impregnation, when in reality the term encompasses a wide variety of different conditions which result in the presence of ovarian and testicular tissue without being fully functional.

“There has never been a fully functional male and female in the same human body ever documented”

The definition of an hermaphrodite or true hermaphrodite has never required the full functionality of the testicular and ovarian tissues, much less a capability for self impregnation.

[....]

“But never a true hermaphrodite that I’ve ever read of documented”

The definition of an hermaphrodite or true hermaphrodite has never required the full functionality of the testicular and ovarian tissues, much less a capability for self impregnation. Consequently, your objections are the actual myth.

“As in a Hermaphrodite? Not necessarily, because there are a very wide range of intersex conditions beyond hermaphroditism which do not result in a clearly evident differentiation between genders.

“Correct me if I am wrong, but don’t most chose which sex to identify with and resemble the most?”

No. In the past, physicians and surgeons unilaterally decided upon surgery and/or with the permission of a parent to surgically assign a gender to the newborn or sometime not long after birth, whether or not the assigned gender comported to the child’s other physical and mental characteristics. In countless other cases the condition was not something which could be safely changed with surgeries or permission of the parents was not obtained to make such changes to the genitalia. The efforts to force surgical gender assignments has a long record of failures, emotional conflicts, and high rates of suicide to escape the social trauma. Human sexual biology is simply far more varied and considerably more common than a simple dichotomy, and pretending this reality does not exist creates unnecessary conflicts.

“I’d give the nod to the Richard and make them go with the rest of the Richards.”

Even though they have D Cup breasts, wide hips, short stature, feminine hair, a woman’s vocal cords and voice, a woman’s face, no appreciable facial hair, and wear a dress or a skirt? Remember, some of the FR posters want a law excluding “Richards” from the women’s restrooms under the penalty of law and threat of arrest and imprisonment as a sexual predator without consideration of intersex conditions.
