Vanity question: just saw doctor, said my cholesterol and blood sugar sky high! Politically active does not count as exercise!!!! Who knew? Doc recommended exercise bike, the portable kind. Saw some on amazon in the $100 price range. Can anyone recommend good brand? Do not need bells and whistles, just durable and simple for senior woman to assemble and fit in car. Want to be fit enough for upcoming election!

Contrarian here: watch your diet, and go for a long walk after dinner and enjoy the sunset.

Alternately do a bit more walking, get more water, fiber, and niacin in your diet, and see if that does the trick.
Unlike a regular bicycle, those stationary bikes are really boring. Good luck!

I was 255 to 260 lbs. Now down to 195. Things that I have learned:

- it took years to put the weight on, it will take at least months, if not years to take it off

- you can’t out exercise your fork

- walking seems to beat just about every other form of exercise

- Sugar is the enemy and it is hiding behind every soda can, sauce, or processed food. Read the label

- Stair step your loss downward. Lose 10 to 15 lbs and then stabilize at the new weight. Lose 10 to 15 more and stabilize again, repeat as often as necessary.

- Most weight loss food is not

Don’t forget to look online for used exercise equipment too

You can often find a treadmill dirt cheap (or free)

My mother has a recumbant bike, as it is easier to get on and off. Plus I don’t think she could fall off of it. She started in her 70’s after having some vascular problems. At 86 she broke her hip, but was back on it in a couple of months. It sure helped her recovery that she was in good shape. She is now 94 and still rides her bike at lease 30 minutes a day. She lives alone with her little dog. Guess we all need to get an exercise bike!

I am adding to the walking bandwagon. Start with a mile or so and work up your distance. A good hour is your goal a few times a week. It’s low impact and smelling the roses is more fun and relaxing than spinning in the same place.

If you are a little bit competitive with yourself and have a smart phone, add an app like Map My Run or Run Keeper to track your time/distance/speed.

If you sit at a desk all day, they have little pedal devices that fit under your desk and they are pretty inexpensive. That keeps you moving. Cheap bikes are pretty hard to stick with. If you are really determined to begin working out, and bikes are what you want, the kind that they have in gyms will be the ones you want. I think decent ones start at around $300 on up.

You might consider looking on Craigslist. People buy these things and then give them away, or sell them for almost nothing, all the time. They don't use them and they are taking up space, and they just want them gone. So you might get one of those $500 units for $25 bucks if you look around.

Consider eliptical units and steppers, too. I can get more from those in a shorter time than from a bike.

Good luck.

I recommend buying a german shorthair puppy.

You will be forced to walk hours a day for the next 7 years.

I know you want a bicycle recommendation, but I do second the notion of walking, serious walking, as a great way to burn calories and help burn a blood sugar, without putting undue stress on joints. Current smart phones come with built-in pedometers, and I find I’m easily able to walk 5 miles a day. In my experience you get most of the benefits of training like a serious athlete, without any of the costs. If you are just starting an exercise plan you can start at a very low level, say 15 minutes a day, and work up.

I assume your high blood sugar is either a sign of already existing or incipient Type II diabetes. (I have had Type I for over 35 years. They’re different diseases, but the complications from high blood sugar are the same.) If you’re just starting treatment for it, the complications can come faster than you think, and develop more quickly. So I do urge you to do what you can to fit regular exercise into your life.

If you do get one, get a recumbent bike. That will put far less stress on your back and you can read or watch news comfortably.

I brought my blood sugar down from 8.9 to 6.1 by cutting out all sugar, including white food— such as white flour, potatoes, and white rice. I eat as much as I want of anything else, and watch how much whole wheat bread. Also lost 15 pounds while doing that. I walk, walk, walk everywhere as much as I can, but then I love to walk and can’t stand any kind of stationary equipment. Bicycling would be my second choice, but its a lot tougher to do in the mountains. If you’re a flat lander, it would be delightful.

Sad thing is, I am not overweight, which is why I ignored my tiredness. ‘Thin on the outside, fat on the inside’! They put me on drastic (to me) Clean Diet so my eating is better. Doc said when it gets too hot outside, I should do the bike.

I’d suggest a ketogenic diet for that cholesterol

I don't know how "portable" it is, but it only weighs 66 lbs. I researched exercise bikes and this was the most quality you can get in that price range. I bought one at Walmart (same price) and have had it for years. It's light yet durable and got 4-1/2 stars in 905 ratings:

Recumbent exercise bike with 8 levels of preset resistance
Easy-to-adjust tension-tightening knob for different fitness levels
Large console display tracks speed, distance, time, and calories
Counterbalanced pedals with adjustable foot straps; built-in transport wheels
Measures 55 x 40 x 25 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 66 pounds
$135

I agree with all of that AND a protien diet

STOP EATING BREAD AND ANY WHEAT for a month and see if that helps you - it helped me tremendousy

The secret to eating right is good shopping

Eggs, Milk, Cheese, Meats, Fresh Fruits and vegetables. Don;t buy anything else. Get rid of anything you have that is NOT one of those things.

It may sound counter-intuitive, but it is cheaper to eat good foods. A steak may cost more than baloney on bread, but you are less hungry. I sometimes go all day without eating because I had a lot of protein the day before so I am not hungry and I forget.

it this for a months and you will lose weight

breakfast - any type of eggs, orange juice, no toast

lunch - banana and milk, or soup and vegetable (no noodles)

dinner - a piece of steak, chicken, or fish, mashed potatoes or rice, a vegetable - no noodles or bread.

snacks (any time)- pieces of pepperoni and cheddar cheese.
