SEATTLE, Wash. The city of Portland began a pilot program Thursday, to buy one-way bus tickets for homeless people who approach agency staff to say that they have family to stay with in another city. The pilot is set to be completed at the end of June.
On Thursday, the city paid for the first two bus tickets, with destinations of Seattle and Spokane.
Susan Salisbury, a spokesperson for Portlands 211 program, which is handling the pilot, said the agency staff members need to call the homeless persons family or friends in that other city, to verify that there is in fact a plan for housing. Without that verification, they will not buy the bus ticket.

Brilliant!
“... said the agency staff members need to call the homeless persons family or friends in that other city, to verify that there is in fact a plan for housing. ...”
“...need to call...”, right, I’m sure that they will be extraordinarily diligent about busing the “the worthless scum” out of their city! /s/
I’ll chip in for a bus ticket from D.C. to Kenya. Anyone want to help out?
What can you expect from a bunch of rightwingers like you find in Portland. After all, isn’t Portland known for its conservative values? /s
I’m in.
Both socialist ran Portland and Seattle are magnets to the homeless who live off the free good will gouged from the tax payers. The Washington State Democrats are pushing for a state income tax. The Washington voters are on to their scheme and should elect a Republican governor and take over the State House.
There needs to be a way to get these freeloaders independent of the government trough. That is something the Democrat socialist do not want to address. Ever.
I think I see a new episode for “Portlandia” next season:
Portland’s “The Major” comes up with a similar program as part of his continuous rivalry with Seattle. Probably not homeless though, but people who just don’t really fit in that well in Portland, and everybody would just be better off if they just moved to somewhere else, preferably (boo, hiss) Seattle.
These “undesirables” could be anti-hipsters who hate bicycles, soy lattes, cute dog clothes, pickles, milk, the “Flaming Lips”, etc.
(Alternatively, the “undesirables” could simply be “old” people, because “old” people don’t pay enough taxes, consume too many municipal services, complain too much, and occupy prime housing that by rights should be occupied by more hip people.)
arses!...keep your homeless there in your cement jungle and you’re lovey dovey leftists...
How many times has this happened over the years? The “homeless” out live their welcome in a liberal utopia city and are shipped elsewhere. This seems to be a re-curing theme.
In an effort to revitalize their dying downtown, St. Petersburg, Fl. would arrest their homeless, take them to a remote booking facility, discover they didn’t have charges to hold them and let them go. The closest city to the booking facility was Clearwater. Soon, there were no homeless in St. Pete, but Clearwater sued over the practice. I don’t know how it came out, as I left during the suit. But when I visited the downtown was full of sidewalk cafes. I asked a native and she said that if a homeless started hassling the clients that the police would be there to arrest them within minutes. The change was astonishing. You simply can’t have a vibrant downtown with militant homeless panhandlers and druggies.
I guess those cities just don’t get cold enough; Detroit and Buffalo lose people because they are cold, and lazy people won’t do what it takes to deal with that.
Portlandia is a documentary. It’s just across the river. Brooks Bros is a block from Pioneer Square, which is the greatest homeless freak show in the West. So I get to see...
Expand this program. Let’s make a fleet of Liberty Ships. Load them up with progressives and certain minorities who contribute nothing but crime and that hate America. Revoke citizenship and give them free boat passage to Liberia!
I would think that this program would not only pay for itself, but likely would produce a budge surplus when combined with the Mexican wall and illegals going home.
All the loved ones of the homeless, and refugee, and early release felon are in Washington DC with half of your money.
Send them all to DC.
Portland has been the Go-To place for homeless since late 90’s.
Drugs are easy to get and no one bothers them.
Last time I was in Portland I was shocked how many were on the streets.
This is NOT going to make Oregon popular with CA, WA, NV or ID
Seattle and Portland have very mild winters compared to other northern cities. The summers are also very mild, rarely getting over the 90s in the summer. The worst part is the rain. One can stay pretty dry under a Western Hemlock during a good rain.
Crap, I’ll buy a 1st Class airline ticket. 4 of them!!! (if he’ll take the Wookie and the brats with him.)
Yes, that climate isn’t for me (the rain part); I guess it makes sense since the southern part of Alaska is technically a rain forest.
Cities should buy bus tickets, regardless of “confirmation.” Especially if the bum has TB or another contagious disease. Destination for all homeless ought to be San Francisco.
