This could be a great short term or long term rental solution for you. The vans will sleep one or two people. They are spotless and new. I can park them anywhere you would like.

It is a gorgeous example of 30s architecture...I have passed it nearly every day for 40 years and I still smile with admiration when I see it. It badly needs some TLC.

Rents in and around DC have gone through the roof.

In 2003 I rented a 4 bedroom, 3 level, 2 car garage, single family home in Gaithersburg for $1500 a month. The owner was smart enough to sell the thing near the top of the market in 2006. I went to a 3 level townhouse nearby that had 2 bedrooms and a single car garage that was too small to actually use for $1500 a month. Now I’m in a very large one bedroom high rise apt in Alexandria for $1800 a month. Much closer in, and at least 70% of my neighbors are head banging, burka wearing, baby factories.

So you have clearly seen the transformation DC has gone through?

I remember when the line between the “Safe and Unsafe” part of town literally went right down 14th st. That line has been and is being pushed soo far to the north and east that soon the entire city be completely “Gentrified”. Well, at least 90% of it.

Suspect DC is not the only ones that have huge rental increases. First, last and only time I shared a wall with anyone was when I did a three month tdy with my employer back in the early 1980’s. First question I asked was what you do with your stuff? Response was either “What stuff?” or “Pay for storage”. Considered selling home in Houston suburbs while back and renting but couldn’t afford rental rates to live in a safe area. We have our own set of problems here, too.

Will be interesting to see what happens to all those new high rise rentals in Houston if oil price doesn’t start coming back up and layoffs don’t stop. Noticed they finally stopped tearing down and building more in some of the areas. Most young people now can’t afford to buy a house, maintain it and pay the taxes and insurance. Plus I would think they would want to stay pretty mobile considering the state of our country.

Sorry about your current limited housing possibilities but sometimes you have to do what you have to do to survive. At least hope you can keep and carry some kind of personal protection in your area.

Don’t get me wrong, I live in a very nice complex.

I have never felt unsafe even though over the last 7 years I’ve been here there have been 3 murders in my building. It’s a big building. Domestic stuff according to the police. I don’t know my neighbors and I really don’t want to know them. As I type this I can hear a half dozen little arab kids screaming in my hallway. I fricken hate them.

From my seat, I get a sense that our economy has finally adjusted and is beginning to accelerate in certain areas. At the same time I get the feeling that there will be an extraordinary divide as inflation rears it’s nasty head.

If I had the money, I would buy as much urban land or rental buildings as I could. Not just in DC, but virtually every major city.

Me thinks your definition of unsafe is totally different from most of us out here in flyover country. In our neighborhood you can always tell when one of the guys is having a spat with his wife because he will start mowing their lawn, washing their already clean car or power washing the driveway, even though it may be 10 p.m. or 6 a.m. Everyone who lives in our neighborhood are licensed to carry and have guns in their home, except for a couple of Asian families. Murder? Maybe of a stranger who makes the mistake of wondering into the neighborhood and attempts a break-in.

I agree with your feeling that there is going to be an extraordinary divide across our country. What is frightening to someone my age is not knowing exactly where it will rear its ugly head, what impact it will have and on whom. Went through some tough times in the 1940’s. Even though I was small, I do remember and don’t want to go there again.

My wish has always been to have enough money to buy all the vacant land within twenty miles of my home and not allow the city to build anything on it.

My wish is to win the lotto and buy a piece of property in the middle of nowhere. An empty lot with an address and maybe a mailbox that I never opened. There is no legal requirement that anybody should actually accept their mail. I just need an address so I can have a legal Drivers License. I have no intention of ever living there.

Go completely off the Grid.

Travel around the country with a boat load of cash and heavily armed.

Something like this?

I'd be concerned that a door would slam shut and burners ignited.......

Oh, yeah. I used to be a writer on 14th Street before it began to ‘get better.’ I’ve lived in or around the area since 1964. Right now, I’m at Thomas Circle, not far from where the buildings were burned out in the 60s. As you must know, they are JUST NOW beginning to reflourish, all these years later. I do love D.C., I must admit. Despite the fact that I am a Marylander, D.C. is just as much my home. A lot to love and hate here.

Anyplace serviced by BART is also insanely expensive. May not be as bad as in the city but the entire area is not worth the cost of living in it.

I parked on a nearby side street and was being studiously watched by three unsavory looking characters.

Out of curiosity, what about them was unsavory looking?

One or both would get you detained in about 39 states...

The two I’ve heard of in our area are not subsidized by anyone. Sounds like a great option for a single senior. One of them even includes a limited work out room. No worry about taxes, insurance, lawn care, bad neighbors probably don’t stay long, etc.

Plenty of “bad neighbors” in a weekly motel. Guaranteed. Those operations tend to attract riff raf big time.

You’re right about that. The two that I know of are just half a block off the beach and in an area not currently frequented by any local riff raf. They have their own area in another part of the city. I go by several others on the way into Houston that I wouldn’t stay in even if I had armed bodyguards but some of those only have an hourly rate - but you get free movies - and probably not from Netflix. LOL
