Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years (8 part series)

IMO this is the best and most historically accurate of the various dramatizations of the roughly ten years Churchill spent out of public office (the British cabinet) serving only as a private member of parliament. It starts with his break with the leader of the Conservative Party, Stanley Baldwin, over British rule in India and goes on to cover his long and lonely effort to warn Britain of the dangers posed by Hitler and Co. The actors who played some of the other important figures of that period, including Baldwin, Chamberlain, Sir Samuel Hoare and Horace Wilson add a lot of color and I believe accurately capture the character of these often terribly misguided men.

My favorite is The Gathering Storm with Albert Finney as Churchill.

I would second that about the movie “The Gathering Storm” being good, and so is the movie “Into the Storm” I think they should be played back to back.

Fantastic! I just visited the War Rooms 2 weeks ago. He is IMHO the most important person of the 20th century

Aww, c’mon, Hitler wasn’t so bad.

After all, he killed Hitler...

Note that Winnie is more highly regarded over here than over there. Most Brits rank Clement Atlee as their greatest PM.

My favorite is The Gathering Storm with Albert Finney as Churchill.

I thought Finney was magnificent, but The Gathering Storm was a rather truncated version of the story. The Wilderness Years deserves kudos for its completeness.

No. Rohm was SA. That uniform is SS.

Thanks for the thread-never heard of it, just watched the first two episodes.

Visually, to me, it is like watching Jeff Daniels play George Washington. I can handle that. And he does mannerisms very well.

But I LOVE his verbal imitation of Churchill! Absolutely brilliant!

Thanks again, NRx...:)

Interestingly, the great Robert Hardy who plays Churchill in The Wilderness Years appeared in a version of The Gathering Storm from the 70’s. Richard Burton played Churchill and Hardy played von Ribbentrop.

Thanks for this recommend. Will check it out.

This past winter I read Churchill’s six-volume World War 2 history. Incredible man.
