Microsoft has been forced to change the red "x" notification on its Windows 10 upgrade prompts after users reacted angrily to the misleading button.
Microsoft dispensed with the historical function of the red "x" in the upgrade prompts to instead use it as authorisation for the upgrade process; clicking the button meant users gave their consent for the upgrade to take place.
But backlash from users over the perceived trickery has pushed Microsoft to pledge to modify the button back to its original function.
Now, clicking the "x" will dismiss the upgrade prompt and won't initiate the Windows 10 download, Microsoft Windows and devices chief Terry Myerson said in a statement.
"Since we introduced a new upgrade experience for Windows 10, we've received feedback that some of our valued customers found it confusing," Myerson said.

Now let's see how long the bean-counters allow them to continue with this welcome policy.
Confusing?
It clearly means ‘No’.
FYI, mate...
Despicable.
Why is it so important to Microsoft that we switch?
I want to pay for it, because I want the right to complain if it doesn’t work.
I want to be able to ask for my money back, and for my old version to be re-installed.
Anything free is worth what you pay for it.
Because they can make thousands of dollars per user by selling information they get via spyware embedded in W10?
Some of which money will come in the form of tax abatements from Uncle Sam in return for allowing him to breech our privacy at will, without a warrant.

and to be reimbursed for having to buy new software programs because the old one were no longer compatible to the new operating system.

Worth repeating! I’m sure there’s other little gems in there too.
[Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Del]
OR...
Pull the power cord, then unplug the network line (ethernet, dsl, etc.)...
Then reboot into Safe Mode and allow the computer to recover and check all drives. Then reboot again (without connecting the network cable) and uncheck the “allow win10 upgrade” popup box.
Shutdown, connect cables, power up and search for something called Never10 (I think. Someone will chime in in a bit and point it out).
Oh, and of course look for a- ... -an alternative Operating System such as Linux as soon as you can realize what others already have: u-squish (MS) is still actively looking for a way to force you to “upgrade” one way or another. It is only a matter of time until you are assimiliated.
Go Linux.
Or Apple, if you absolutely have to. To each his own.
Part of it is probably an attempt at reducing support costs by getting everyone on the same system. Also encourages developers to write for W10 if there is a large user pool.
I noticed it when it was about 32% done.
I decided to let it go to see if I liked it. I didn't.
When I went to restore Windows 7, my computer crashed and I lost everything.
I had a friend re-install Windows 7 but I had to repurchase some software downloads because he couldn't restore those.
He also installed a "Never 10" program.
***power up and search for something called Never10 (I think***
Yes it is Called GRC Never 10.

I had to use it when a flash upgrade made an override of my previous Config file changes that stopped windows updates.
The nice thing about the little program is that it can also remove any windows 10 related software downloads remaining on your computer. I had over 6 Gig of windows 10 files downloaded that were removed by this program.
They are resorting to the sort of tricks porno pop-ups used to use. This isn't just another upgrade that they hope will get a user base; heck, in the past they knew everyone would over time. But now they are being intentionally deceiptful and trying hard to trick users into "upgrading" against their will. Something is up here.
Well I had been on Linux for about 10 years, on my home computer.
I have a new PC I am using now, it is Windows 10 and I am quite happy with it.
Linux cinammon mint 17.2 is excellent.
Cobbled together an old pc. Single 64bit athlon, 4g ram, gt610 vid card. And it runs better than any windoze box that has dual proc.
Really like Linux.
This Windows 10 user says it’s about damned time!
How many times will I have to shut that pop up off?
When they no longer support 7 I go Linux or OS2.
Bring it you jerks...
Thanks folks. Just installed Never10 on my tablet. Next on laptop. Both win8.1.
