Olivia de Havilland turns 100: An appreciation
SF Chronicle ^ | 6/29/16 | G. Allen Johnson

One would like to think that Olivia de Havilland, the last remaining cast member from “Gone With the Wind” and, indeed, the last remaining female star from Hollywood’s Golden Age, had a vibrant lunch among friends at her Paris residence to celebrate her 100th birthday on Friday, July 1.

“She’s gone through life collecting friends,” film critic and author Donald Spoto, a good friend who often lunches with de Havilland, said during a visit to San Francisco in 2013. “She’ll talk about her films if you ask her, but she never turns the spotlight on herself. She’s much more interested in hearing about you, and what you’re doing. She’s an extraordinary human being.”

You can tell a lot from a person's face sometimes.

Particularly when one gets older.

Olivia and sister Joan Fontaine. Betcha the so-called "sister feud" was all publicity.

She and Bette Davis were so great in “Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte.” Olivia managed to become lifelong friends with the tempermental Davis - that was quite an achievement.

I was hoping to be reminded of her sister. Her name escaped me.

During a screening of Jane Eyre, when I was in college, my friends made me come watch her. They were right, it was like looking in a mirror when she arrived to meet Mr. Rochester.

Fun to remember...about 1955 ?

Not to worry. I usually can't even remember the last meal I had.

There really is such a thing as inner beauty that stays the ravages of time. Olivia de Havilland is a lovely lady yet.

In contrast, there is Helen Thomas. She wasn’t born ugly, but made herself that way.

Anyway, always good to know that one of the greats is still with us.

I read she and her sister NEVER reconciled before Miss Fontaine’s death.

She isn’t the last surviving cast member from Gone With The Wind. The two who played her son (Beau Wilkes) in the movie Patrick Curtis (uncredited) as an infant and Mickey Kuhn are still around. There might be a few others although everyone else in the main cast have passed away. Regardless Olivia is remarkable to have reached this milestone. Congrats!

She was a cousin of Geoffrey de Havilland who founded the airplane company. She visited Toronto to commemorate the de Havilland factory anniversary there around 1989. The factory is now owned by Bombardier.

No it wasn’t publicity, they didn’t talk to each other for over 30 years.

There’s an awful lot of pictures of the “two” feuding sisters together.....at different stages of their lives....young, old and in between.

This article provides a bit more insight. In short, it described their relationship as running hot and cold. Apparently, what put it on ice for the latter decades had to do with their mother’s death.
