As above, history and a video. Had other links but an update appears to have 'moved' them.

In the early 1970s, the labs imported sizeable quantities of Giant Hissing Madagascar cockroaches (so-called because, well, they are huge and they hiss and they normally only live on Madagascar) to see what would happen when they zapped them with large amounts of radiation.

I think I've seen that movie...

Yep! Gotta protect us Twinkies. :o)

I’d scatter a big bag of diatomaceous earth & inform the
public to keep out of it. It ain’t poison; but it does cut
giant roaches that crawl through it & kills them that way.

Yes. Those little sticky traps will catch & kill stuff, too,
but I think they’re cruel. - Of course, the Diatomaceous
Earth cuts and kills bugs, too. If they eat it, death is
fairly quick and merciful; cuts the guts. That may seem
cruel; but it’s probably a quick way to go. - If you get
DE for around the house, get the FOOD GRADE from ebay. (I
also give it to our dog, (mix with liquidish food); and it
kills intestinal parasites inside her as well.) I take it,
too, but TAKE CARE NOT TO GET IT ON YOUR HANDS OR IN YOUR
EYES. It cuts - tiny cuts. DO NOT use the POOL GRADE DE.

I have not been able to get much down our cat. She is too
picky; but she has the most parasites of any of us. I have
rubbed a little bit of FOOD GRADE D.E. on her fur & she
licked it off when cleaning herself. Also rubbed her in a
little bit of garlic which she actually likes pretty well.
I’m afraid she will get the D.E. in her eyes while cleaning
herself.

I don’t really like killing our little spiders around the
house as they catch flies and all sorts of little bugs for
their food. The giant wolf spiders I did put down DE on
the floor trim under the bed to dispatch them. It is scary
to have a giant wolf spider crawling all over you when
you’re asleep at night.

As others have posted, here and on other forums, I was one of those that remember the arrival of the bug spray truck...

In my town it was similar to a mini cement mixer, with the chute pointing upward. The sound of the sprayer announced the trucks arrival, loud but only within a block.

The truck slowly progressed down the street. My Mother came to alert and said... go upstairs and close all the windows.

More or less, the mosquitoes returned within a few days and no bicycles were harmed

"As long as they stay away from the Twinkie factory in Natick!"

I'm almost ascared to tells ya, (unless you already know), but the Twinkie factory is now hotel/condo.

[I grew up less than a mile from it too, back when there was a single swinging yellow flashing light above the intersection of Route 9 and Speen Street. Natick Drive In and sewer fields]

Yeah...knew that. The whole family used to go over there to get our Wonder bread and such for the week. That was long ago.

Do you remember the aroma that used to come from that place when you went into the Sears parking lot? Heeeeeavenly.

Good Lord, are you a local?

In Grade school, we went to the bakery.

Did you get to go to Carling’s?

We obviously had more discerning cock-a-roaches and a better containment group.

Unfortunately, we also had Kennedy’s.
