Hope the pilot has some extra underwear around.
I would have “ejected” something for sure.
The worst part is that he almost certainly had to go around and do it again.
News story from the hospital after the Eisenhower cable break: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mqutUQrHN4
There has been at least one case where a snapped cable cut a sailor in two.
Cables are supposed to be changed after no more than 100 traps.
There would be an investigation on this. Likely questions would be:
How many traps were on that cable?
Was the checklist followed on installing the cable? Checklist documentation required.
Disclosure statement: I have never been on a carrier that was in service, I have never been in the US Navy. I am an engineer who has worked in chemical plants and refineries, and have been involved in root cause analysis after serious safety incidents. The focus is not so much who to blame (although in the Navy this could be career limiting for some), but more how to avoid this from happening again.
Excellent recovery on his part.
The best looking military plane since prop fighters. Used to love watching them from NJ Air Guard when I was at Dix. Ol' lady's BCT Co was separated from end of runway on McGuire by a chain link fence and two lane road.
Pilots would stand them on their tail and go straight up, full afterburner.
I'd usually have to seek medical attention for an erection that lasted more than 4 hours.
Holy cow!
Or the deck crew. God Bless them and keep them safe with what they do.
I don’t think the E-2 has ejection seats or the crew would’ve punched. All the pilot could do was firewall the engine, resist the urge to pull the yoke into his stomach, and pray.
That’s exactly why the pilot throttles up when touching down - so they have the momentum should the line break or abort the landing for some reason.
Nice video.
The ground crew was in as much danger as the aircrew. Snapped cables have killed people.
Thank you, God!
Heluva a job by the pilot. Looked pretty routine right up till the cable broke. I used to work on USAF barriers and saw lots of engagements at way higher speeds than on a carrier and never saw a cable break. We had a formula depending on speed and weight of the aircraft (F-4s) that required a change of cable after so many engagements varying on that formula. Fastest I ever saw was about 180 kts and that required an immediate cable change.
Pilot must has thought, “Ah, nailed it. Three-wire... What the !!!!”
Nice recovery!
Our mayor is a Nam-era F4 pilot. State law for swearing in as a mayor includes asserting you’re not a member of the Communist Party. I commented to my neighbor “Not only is he not a member of the Communist Party, he has actually bombed Communists!”
Ten to the tenth power pucker factor with a boundary of infinity? I imagine he thought about it after but not while. In those four or five seconds training had to take over. All you can do is follow the training and fly the airplane.
I’m always amazed at almost all these people. They have to be way above average to think as fast as they must.
I used to work the flight deck on the U.S.S. Enterprise during Viet Nam. I saw a lot of interesting things happen. One was the pilot must have thought he missed the arresting cables and started to take off. Well in fact he did catch the last one and the plane slammed onto the deck. Also lots of ordinance skidding across the flight deck that did not release when it was suppose to.
“Hey. Who broke the rope I left to dry out on the deck?”
