What is the nicest, or highest quality classic car or Muscle Car you've ever personally driven?
You won’t believe what I sold mine for, and what I paid to buy it. I sold my 1957 Chevy 2-dr coupe around 1975 for $300, fully loaded with racing gear. I needed money fast for root canal work on my teeth. Back then cars were cheap. I originally paid the equivalent of $15 to buy it around 1971. The guy went to Vietnam and his mom didn’t want the car hanging around, no engine. So I popped my own drivetrain in it, and souped it up. I recently (about 2010) talked to a guy selling an identical black 1957 like yours, at a car show, he wanted $25,000 for it, not fancy like mine that I sold for $300. Who knew they would go up in value like that.
I'd enjoy a Cougar too. But as I am 65, she'd be 85 if she were a day! (What?! not THAT kind of cougar? Never mind....)
1953 Merecedes Benz 300 SL Coupe.
Was about ten years old when the owner of three GullWings allowed me to sit in one of his. This was back in 1957 or 58. He was buying them up as an investment.
Best owned was a Jaguar XK-150 3.4L roadster.
I bought a 1966 427 ci corvette when I returned from Viet Nam and have never had anything nicer since. Unless you count the two old Harley Pan Heads I have right now.
My first car was a 1969 Chevrolet Nova SS 350.
A wide range to pick from.
I don't know about classic but my vote for muscle car is the
1965 Pontiac GTO with installed Royal Oaks Bobcat Kit.
The scariest car I was ever in was my brother’s high school buddy’s dark green 1969 SS 396 4-speed Nova. That car was brutally fast in any gear.
The best I can do is my current car. An Infiniti G35, 260HP, 260 lbs of torque. It will haul butt.
1971 Camaro SS a friend stripped to the frame and rebuilt. At 90, I shifted into fourth and chirped the tires.
I also took a Viper for a short drive once.
Beyond that, nothing really exotic.
Pontiac Firebird 1982. I had a silver one. Took my breath away every time I walked into the garage. Had a Mazda RX7. Great car but that Firebird....
At a Wash DC Auto show in the early sixties new foreign cars were somewhat of a novelty. Many show visitors were seeing some makes for first time. Which made for some interesting comments.
While elbowing through the crowd, one middle aged man was insisting to his wife that the sedan they were looking at was a Jaguar, "It's Jaguar honey. See, it says so on the speedometer."
"J-a-e-g-e-r....Jaguar."
That caused me to do a double take with a chuckle. Followed by another stifled laugh as I saw the car being inspected was a Peugeot 404 sedan.
Peugeot....Jaguar,
The Factories are only Three Hundred miles and a Ferry crossing apart, what’s that between friends? LOLOL.
I love the Car Threads on FR, Always makes and models I’ve never heard of.
There you go Gigster ,you survived your first thread. :)
Small point, but the Charger was an A-833 4 speed manual, not a Torqueflite automatic.
My old 68 Cougar XR7 had leather seats and a cool overhead console. Very high quality and comfortable. I’m working on a 68 Cyclone GT right now.
I loved my ‘68 Chevelle SS 396. You’re of course right about the ‘68 Firebird 400. Like the ‘68 Chevelle SS 454, it was easy to make that front end lift off the ground ... even with its heavy engine block! But smooth sailing on straight roads (like the Ohio Turnpike at 3 a.m.) at 90 or 100 (not that I ever did that ... heh-heh!)
We had bias ply tires and drum brakes....but it was a blast!
Working at the GM Van Nuys, California plant where they were made at the time, I later owned an ‘82 Firebird TransAm 5.0-HO which, because of the California emissions, couldn’t hold a candle to that ‘68 Chevelle SS! Now I drive a Honda CRV ... very nice, but ... well ... y’know how it is!
Thank you for your response to my thread. I have to concede that the Charger probably did have the A-833, but I have a couple of other points. After watching the chase scene dozens of times, I have come to the conclusion that both of the cars must’ve had something like 8-speed manual transmissions. When you listen to the chase as it happens, you hear McQueen shifting the Mustang multiple times when he’s already apparently going 60-70 miles an hour. So too, with the Charger. you can hear it shift, but it’s already going far too fast to necessitate a gear change. I just find it amusing. Best regards.
