New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Within the second? That’s pretty impressive.

So, maybe this ol’ girl can best a 14.0 after all.

I just may try it sometime.

On a track, of course; this isn’t “American Graffiti” out here.

HEY, now that’s really cool!

There’s just no substitute for the sound of those big radial engines.

The Collings foundation brings their birds out here to Buchanan Field [CCR] once in awhile, and I’ve enjoyed climbing around in them; it’s like climbing into history itself. But that B-29 is something else, again.

Thanks for sharing!

They are a great looking bird ,aren’t they. (?)
Good to see another one return to the skies.

Our Lancaster has been fixed, but the Vulcan is now ‘permanently’ grounded with low airframe time remaining.
They have been joined by a Canberra and a soon to the flying Victor.

You could always find the nearest drag strip and enter it in the Door-Slammer bracket. Or Grocery-Getter. Or whatever they call it in your neck of the woods. All you would need is a helmet.

I’m curious, now, how fast that little beauty WILL go!

I think it’s great that you have a hobby.

I have a car with an engine, transmission, and tires. That’s about all I know about that part of the car.

Oh, and it’s not worth spending any kind of money to park a car on the streets of Manhattan, although I have seen a Maserati up against the curb, which strikes me as phenominally stupid. Then again, there are a lot of Democrats here.

By the way, if you’ve seen THe Avengers you’ve seen Guardians of the Galaxy, just with different faces on the characters.

I would see more movies if I had someone to go with, or, alternatively, if I had a DVD player that worked. :o[

DVD players should be down to about $10 now, unless you want a SMART one.

Yes, same cat.

I went to Weight Watchers for the first time in a month. Gah. Glad to see my friends, though! Next I’m going to buy Tom some gas, and then we’ll vote, and then I’ll go on an hour walk with James and anyone else who comes along.
