Matilda Rapaport, a Swedish extreme free skier, has died after she was caught in an avalanche while filming promotional material for an upcoming video game last week in Chile. She was 30.
Rapaport was engulfed by the avalanche Thursday after a winter storm in the resort village of Farrellones, about 45 miles northeast of Santiago in central Chile. According to a statement released Monday by Red Bull, one of her sponsors, she succumbed to her injuries a few days later despite intensive medical care and treatment over the subsequent days. She had been married to her longtime boyfriend, alpine World Cup racer Mattias Hargin, for only a few months.

Rapaport was in Farrellones filming promos for a Ubisoft video game called Steep, in which multiple players compete against each other in various extreme winter sports, including skiing, snowboarding, wingsuit flying and paragliding.

Game Over
She died doing what she loved.
But, of course, we have to find a way to make sure that this never happens again.
I call for congress to ban snow, mountains, gravity and momentum!
Dying is rather extreme. I prefer sports where the risks are some bruises or maybe a broken rib.
I’m sorry that she died but there is a reason they call these sports “extreme.” Participants take the risk and must be willing to face the consequences.
Oh man.
I watched one of those Everest movies, and the “victims” just aren’t very sympathetic characters (and it was based on a true story). They really played up the commercial side of it (that tour guides felt pressure because the previous year nobody had reached the top, for example). Reminiscent of the Titanic trying to set a transatlantic crossing record...
Even back then I knew that any sport where there was a ambulance waiting for you at the bottom was a bad idea.
Can’t control the avalanche.
RIP.
Games + “extreme” sports immediately brings two phrases to mind - “Darwin’s Award” and “What could possibly go wrong?”.
Somebody uses the phrase “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes”...Just the same, RIP; it isn’t as bad as the base-jumping lady who jumped to protest the park service ban (due to safety concerns) and died when she failed to open her chute...
I know that was so wrong.
This saved the life of a ski patrol woman at Snowbird this winter: http://blackdiamondequipment.com/en_US/ski-packs/saga-40-jetforce-BD681303_cfg.html

Got a little too extreme for him I guess.
