Because a lot of people are quite blinded by Ted Cruz cultist behavior. So it became necessary to either get an endorsement or to expose the type of man he really was. Ted chose option #2 like the dumbass he is.
No downside.
A) Cruz endorses: good for Trump.
B) Cruz publicly refuses to endorse, which means he crashes and burns: good for Trump.
You have actually asked the key question, and you don't realize it, but it is a window into the A-B mindset. Totally different than what we're used to in politics, but common at the highest levels of executive strategy and decision-making.
