I would call the cops.
If you pay someone to watch your property and they sell it (!) that doesn’t mean it’s no longer your property. The people watching it had no right to sell it, so I can’t imagine how the person who has it now could have the legal right to OWN it.
It’s a civil case, not a criminal one.
The original owner would probably win in court and force the return of the lizard, but it would not be cheap.
Lawsuit time if pet store owner can’t get it back. Out of business for an error like that. Guy sleeping with lizard needs intervention and treatment.

Precisely. Somebody needs to go to jail, whether the store owner or the buyer who technically STOLE it. Nobody respects private property anymore?
