A lot of employers require an undergrad degree. If employers were allowed to give general aptitude tests they would drop this requirement.

BINGO! There is the nub of the problem. Employers have drunk the Kool-Aid and now see a BA as the MINIMUM requirement to even get your foot in the door.

Is even worse when the company is large and resumes go thru the hands lf HR staff who themselves all have worthless BA degrees.

Is even worse if you went to an Ivy League school or other elite university. At that point competence or ability hardly even matter. They see that on your resume, they have their multiple orgasm, then they write you a check.

I agree. Employers are a HUGE part of the problem.

Aptitude tests are by definition racist

Employers are allowed to test for skills directly related to the job they are applying for.

When I applied for a cashiering job back in college, they were allowed to test my math skills. They were not allowed to give a math test to the guy applying to stock shelves.

I’m in favor of aptitude tests, they weed out a lot of the “administrative passers” who got their degrees without actually learning anything.

This is so stupid. It’s just a piece of paper. It’s the high school diploma of yesteryear.

Little secret for people in many states: you don’t need a high school diploma at all. If your state allows you to go to community college at 16, unless you (or your child) are really involved in sports or other high school valuable pursuits, get out after your sophomore year. Go to a community college and get an AA degree. At that point, no one will ever ask you about your high school diploma ever. Greatest secret to avoid a bunch of time wasting for some kids. You can transfer to a university for the next two years or do whatever you want to follow a career.
