A New Perspective on the Life and Legacy of Photographer Slim Aarons
The Wall Street Journal ^ | August 10, 2016 | Laura Hawk

IN THE SUMMER OF 1977 the celebrated photographer Slim Aarons was lunching at the Hotel Goldener Hirsch in Salzburg, Austria, with Princess Grace of Monaco and her 20-year-old daughter, Caroline. At one point, as he later recounted time and again, Grace was struck by what she thought was a wonderful idea: “Oh, Slim, why not hire Caroline to work with you? You two could travel around the world together!” Caroline excitedly nodded her approval. As Slim told the story, a devilish smile crept across his face. “Why, what a wonderful idea, Grace,” he replied, making it clear he was on a first-name basis with the princess. “But there’s just one question,” he said. He already knew the answer, but he strung it along. “Caroline,” he asked, leveling his gaze at her, “can you get up in the mornings—early? Every morning?” They both looked at him, perplexed, and shortly thereafter the subject changed.

I camped in a South Georgia State Park for a couple of days.

I remember a professional photographer and either his wife or an assistant carrying a heavy load of cameras, lenses, and tripods while wading through the shallow waters of a lake.

It was obvious that he was taking wildlife photos, probably of birds.

It suddenly struck me why my photos never looked professional. I just was not willing to do the work involved. Also my equipment was mostly not of pro quality but I suspect a real pro would have done just fine with it.

My husband is a subscriber.I’ll get the link from him. ( Don’t know if I can share.)

Of if I remember correctly, WSJ allows you to view their site after a few weeks.

Looks nice through the screen though.

Gorgeous. Some of them are of people who dressed so classically 40 years ago, they could have been taken today.

The next-to-last photo with the two magnificent dogs — are those dogs real, or sculptures? It’s hard to tell. They are stunning, so beautifully muscled, as if they are competitive racers.
