US swimmers Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz have told police that they fabricated claims that they and their Olympic teammate Ryan Lochte were robbed at a gas station on Sunday. The sudden admission came as video was released in which the men can be seen running to and from the bathroom, spending over 10 minutes at the gas station a little after 6am in the morning. Sources have confirmed to DailyMail.com that Lochte and the group destroyed a gas station door and refused to pay for the damage until a security guard demanded they hand over money.

There went a good opportunity for income from endorsements. They should be shunned by decent people.

"If true it's clearly wrong. But having some knowledge of Brazil (two visits, one which involved a friend being robbed at gunpoint in Rio) I'm very, very suspicious of this story.Brazil is not *Third* World...it's *Fourth* World.Corrupt to the core. It's Mexico speaking Portuguese. It must be acknowledged that government officials routinely threaten people...particularly foreigners...in many, many ways."

It is looking like a chapter of Ugly Americans, but I suppose you could be right. They could have been told they had better confess or they would spend a long time in Brazil while their charges worked their way through a corrupt legal system.

Well, there is the video. The cover up worse than the crime. If Lochte would have simply told his mom he “lost” his money, nobody would have ever heard about this.

Loose Lips Sink Ships. A lie got out of control.

I feel a haiku:

They trashed a bathroom?
That whole country's a toilet
So yeah, not guilty

I was just saying to my husband that Lochte was suffering from a lack of media attention. That being said, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that the two swimmers taken off the plane had no choice but to say the story was made up. I hope we find out the truth.

In case there was any lingering doubt about what an idiot Lochte is.

Regardless of what really happened, Brazil is not the USA. Since Brazil is not the USA, they can rightfully process suspected criminals according to Brazilian law. Brazil is under no obligation to honor any of the rights we enjoy here in the USA (at least for now).

With that in mind, were it me in that situation I would say or sign anything that allows me to GTF out of Brazil and on any plane bound to anywhere in the USA.

After getting back home, let the press figure it out. They will make up something anyway.

“I STILL DON’T CARE, LOCHTE RULES !! F OFF RIO ...”

That’s cool.

But if Ryan had acted like a civilized human being, or at least kept his mouth shut, he would be signing for millions in endorsements.

He may rule, but he is not smart.

Their Olympics were over. They were out partying and drinking. They needed a bathroom but the bathrooms were all locked. Instead of public urination (which the rest of the country does) they broke a door. After they are done the security guard shows up and demands the money to fix the door (otherwise it would probably come out of his pay). The guard may have to be somewhat persuasive and pulls his gun. They pay him and leave. They make up a story to cover why they lost all their money.

The swimmers are stupid jerks but an open bathroom would have helped.

Since when is 10 minutes too long for a quick stop at a restroom? From all I've read about the facilities at this Olympics, why are we to believe the door at this gas station wasn't damaged before Lochte's group arrived?

The fact that the 'security guard' DEMANDED money - can also be interpreted as being robbed.

Not buying the revised narrative - not yet.

The bathroom was locked. They broke into it.

Why didn’t they just ask for the keys ?

Because you must grease the palm of the security guard if you want to use the bathroom.

P.S. You can be sure that the guard demanded an exorbitant ‘fee’ because he had some ‘rich furriners’ under his thumb. Ergo the ‘armed robbery’

Did they file a police report about this alleged robbery? If not, then why are the authorities holding or seeking to hold the swimmers?

Don’t get me wrong, if they lied, then they deserve ridicule and derision, but neither of those involve the Brazilian Authorities!!

I think the American press are making this to be a bigger deal than it truly is/was.

Again, stupid lies make you look pretty stupid. But if the police were not involved with the whole incident, then why are they now?

Personally, I think that integrity does matter.

I think so too. However this tale did not actually benefit them in any way. Supposedly they damaged a door at a gas station (drunk and stupid) and (admittedly after some ... urging) they paid for it. So they didn't actually try to cover up a crime or anything. And nothing they did affected the outcome of any events or harmed the integrity of the sport. So it appears some guys told a dumb story to get attention and explain how they lost all their cash because they were embarrassed.

Not something I'd do but not something worthy of threats of prison either, which they got.
