Walmart bucks downward trend in retail with earnings beat
New York Post ^ | August 18, 2016 | Reuters

Earlier this year, Walmart said it would invest $2.7 billion over two years to increase entry-level wages to $10 an hour, a move the company said has led to cleaner stores, faster checkouts and improved customer service.

“Walmart’s strategic investments are generating traction, which is especially meaningful, given a large portion of its customer base remains challenged,” said Moody’s analyst Charlie O’Shea.

The company bucked a string of weak results by higher-end brick-and-mortar competitors like Target, Macy’s and Kohls.

Girl-wear is about all that’s left in major malls, too.

In reality, they picked up Target customers.

Their main competitor Target is all tied up with letting men into the ladies room, which is more important to them than making money.

To accelerate its e-commerce business and narrow the widening gap with rival Amazon.com, Walmart recently paid more than $3 billion to acquire internet retailer Jet.com, the highest price ever for an online startup.

Wow.

Would be interesting to know how much of Wally World’s income is generated by people using food stamps versus paying with their own money.

When we used to shop at Target’s would make a quick run through the grocery section just because we were there and it would save another stop. Seemed like Target didn’t necessarily care whether people shopped for groceries there or not.

Walmart prices are going up. To continue making a profit, Walmart, like any other successful business, has to pass on its cost of doing business to customers. Businesses’ primary reasons for being are to provide goods and services at a profit. Providing jobs is just incidental to that end, but it’s not the end. Libs think businesses are there to provide jobs for Democrat voters.

Walmart has more problems than just its P&L Statement.

It was just revealed yesterday as a lead story on a talk-radio show that crimes, even violent crimes, are committed in Walmarts across the country at rates FAR above any other retailers. Shoplifting is absolutely rampant. And this is even in their “nicer” areas.

Chalk it up to the type of customers which often visit stores, but that’s the facts.

They’ve made internal changes for efficiency. They’ve added additional higher shelving to eliminate some of the stock handling. That means a higher stock rate and probably sales.

There was a thread about that yesterday, but the yank-happy mods pulled it for ... who knows?

As far as the article, it’s about WM’s rise while others are dropping, not WM’s ‘problems.’

Re your post #10, those improvements may enable them to raise prices less. Not all of their prices are up; in fact, in San Diego a gallon of Walmart label 1% or 2% milk is $2.29, lower than its been in a while.

The 10 self check out scanners in my Super Walmart are a top notch improvement in this customer's opinion. Always one open. Don't have the internal ire associated with waiting behind a mooch and watching it use EBT. I get to bag my own stuff. I don't care how many things I'm buying, I'm using the self checker.

A curious aside to that, I've noticed the "manned" register cashiers acting way more friendly and actually standing at the head of their line trying to coax shoppers in. Some must see their jobs on the future chopping block.

There is a mall down the street.
Have not set foot in there in twenty years.

I don’t smoke cigars.
I’m not in the market for a piano.
And even if I were a cross-dresser I wouldn’t pay those prices.

Walmart has a ten foot rule. Any time a customer comes within ten foot of an associate, they’re supposed to ask if the customer needs help. Walmart recognizes customer service as key to building loyalty.

I suspect associates have been reminded.

I’d be willing to bet that if you broke in down by number of customers, it wouldn’t any higher than other stores.’

More customers, more people, more crime.

Nobody’s at the Kmart or Sears, so little or no crime.
