If you want on or off the ping list for the daily newspaper from 120 years ago, drop me a line, either here or by FReep mail. The rate is 23 cents per week (3 cents for the dailies and a nickel for Sunday).
OMGOSH...I love the ‘moonshine’ era...how they put strong springs in their cars so when all the moonshine went in, it would look like it was a normal car; how the drivers could out drive any agent in the area...that is how NASCAR got it’s beginnings...
Please add me to your list...
Done. On a side note, 1896 is somewhat pre-NASCAR. But who knows. Maybe they fed the stuff to their horses.
My grandmother, a Victorian, Italian, English lady, Catholic, would make a batch of ‘moonshine’ every year...I snuck a taste, almost died on the spot...WOW!!!
In a couple of months will be the national election for President. Compare 1896 to now. Hardly a headline about it in 1896. Part of the reason is the federal government was a small part of Americana - about 5-8% of the GDP - and probably wasn’t thought about much by the average Joe who was free to come and go as he pleased and liked it that way.
The 20th Century ushered in big government and tyranny.
let me tell the story.
i can tell it all.
about a mountain boy, who ran illegal alcohol.
his daddy made the whiskey. the son, he drew the load,
and when his engine roared they call the highway thunder road.
Actually the daily papers have been filled with election coverage since Bryan got the nomination. I can’t remember the last time I posted the daily paper when there wasn’t extensive front page election coverage. The election of 1896 was one of the most important in our history. The major issue being populism (and Free Silver) vs Constitutional Conservatism (and the Gold Standard).
Interesting. Well, I looked across today’s headlines and saw nary a one about it.
“Populism” vs. “Constitutional Conservatism”. Hmmm. Same as today only deeper and more threatening - unconstitutional federal government tyranny vs. constitutional limited federal government.
“BUSY DAYS FOR McKINLEY” - Front page center headline.
Right but he’s the President and nothing at least in the first part about the election that I saw.
Actually, he is the GOP candidate. Grover Cleveland is still president in 1896. McKinley became famous for campaigning mostly from his home.
