“Considering the lousy handling and braking of the old cars guess that would bring you ‘closer to God’ but maybe not in the way you meant?”

No, I think you read me right; I meant that, in those older cars, when you were pushing the envelope, the line between control and disaster was real thin, and — for real — God was just on the other side of it.

“I think there are a lot of ‘enhanced’ memories.”

‘ZACKLY!!

What’s that Springsteen song “Glory Days”?
Everyone wishes they lived a few.
So, hey, looking back the cars were faster, the girls were better looking, the parties were wilder...

Writers call it romanticism & everybody does it to a degree. And booze makes it worse. LOL!

My Cyclone has an FE 390 big block. The NASCAR Cyclones started with a 396 ci, then a 427, and finally the Boss 429.

Originally, that spoiler was installed flush with the trunk lid. After those 2 sat on the spoiler, it rose up like the Loch Ness monster.

I had a friend with a 67? Fairlane and it had a lot of torque.

Delivered a friend’save 68 Torino 390 from FL to WA. Saved me a plane flight but cost a fortune in gas!

With a 150 mph speedometer how did they clock the speed?

Odometer or mile markers and a stopwatch or clock with a second hand. We learned to do that in the dreadful days of 85mph speedos that even a Chevy Chevette could peg.

“the dreadful days of 85mph speedos that even a Chevy Chevette could peg. “

Downhill with a tailwind while drafting a semi ....

Maybe ...

“Odometer or mile markers and a stopwatch or clock with a second hand. “

Burying the tack doing 10,000 rpm with an engine that could only pull 6,400 rpm on a public road doing 190 on a buried speedometer on tires not rated for that speed ...

I call bs.

I’m not verifying anyone’s story, I simply explained HOW you could determine speed without a speedometer’s help.

OK. Just the picture in my mind of these dudes doing 190+ down a public road with stopwatches ....
