SUMMARY

Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Android 7.0 is finally here! It looks smooth and makes several improvements, but does it actually matter? Most Android users won't see this update for quite some time, as Android updates typically have a very slow adoption rate. Demonstrated below, half of Android users are running their devices on software from 2013 or earlier. Prior to 7.0, only 15.2% of users operate on the most current system,

On the other hand, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has been overwhelmingly successful in converting its users to software updates. As of August 15th, 87% of iOS users were on the latest iOS 9 update. Another 10% aren't far behind and operate on iOS 8. Only 3% operate their devices on previous models.

For whatever reason, Android devices are orphaned by service providers. Tablets not tied to service providers, but still having enough horsepower to run latest versions are often left out of the update stream. Older phones that are migrated out of the primary service providers, to the secondary market are also left out of the update stream.

Keep changing that advertising ID in google settings...

I have an iPhone 6. Have gone from iOS 8.0 to (soon) 10.0 easily. Will finally retire the phone when the 2017 model iPhone arrives in September 2017.

Seeking Alpha reports that 97% of iOS users are on iOS 9 (87%), the latest version of Apples mobile operating system, or iOS 8 (10%), with only 3% operating a device with a lower iOS version, while only 15.2% of Android devices are on Android 6 Marshmallow, the latest version, and an astonishing 49% are still running Android 4 or older! — PING!

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 running Android 4.4. Never had any problems and don't plan to retire it until it dies or won't run any apps.

This is the biggest problem. No one wants to fork over $400+ every couple of years so they can “upgrade”. My Samsung Tab S can probably handle Android 7 no problem, but I can’t even upgrade to 6 because Samsung has decided that it isn’t included in the upgrade path.

My tablet still works fine, so I have no reason to abandon it just to get a newer OS, not to mention the cost. My device also isn’t tied to a carrier, so I can’t just “trade up” to get something newer with the purchase price folded into my monthly bill where I won’t notice it; I have to buy the entire device out of my own pocket up front.

If I had a Samsung Galaxy S4, I would have retired it and replaced it with the current Galaxy S7 back in March 2016. The Galaxy S7 in many ways is a WAY better phone, especially with mobile payment support and just generally faster operation.

My Verizon Note 5 (and previous Note 2) get regular updates to the OS.

This is quite a bit of FUD, but that's OK...

After all, iOS is losing market share (it's about 1/6th that of Android, worldwide) and Samsung consistently outsells Apple in smartphones - and that's not including all the other big players in the market (Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, etc).

That’s why, for those w/ an ‘electric-thumb’, there’s the non-official ROM updates.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php

Have updated by ‘old’ Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 tablet from 4.4 to 6.x. Plus, I picked a slimmed down version, so I don’t have all the factory bloat-ware either.
