Of course he had a primo Minelab gold machine and then found it a foot deep. Their top end machines will find a 1 ounce nugget 3 or 4 feet deep and in Australia that means spending the next few hours in the ferocious sun chiseling through soil that probably has compressive strength equal to 6 sack concrete while praying it’s not an old horseshoe or a fork (gold machines don’t do discrimination well if at all).
One of our local forumites shelled close to 4K for their GPX 3000(?) a few years back and scored about 18 ounces of nuggets on their first trip that were all about 4 inches deep :-)
