Black Sabbath bids New England farewell at Xfinity Center

Forty-five years to the month after making its New England debut, pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath took to the stage at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield to bid the road farewell. From the perfect weather to a deep-cut-rich set list, it was a best-case concert scenario that highlighted the massive place in musical culture the band has occupied for the better part of five decades.

The audience ranged in age from fired-up retirees to one particularly enthusiastic preschooler in hot-pink ear protection. Families galore sang along with every word, and more than a few friendships on display predated the Nixon administration. There were off-the-clock executives, tradespeople, and gawky, goofy teenagers acting too cool for their obviously cool parents. This was a microcosm of humanity, a heartwarming display of heavy metal's broad appeal.

“45 years...there’s just something wrong about these rock groups that just keep playing until they’re octogenarians.”

It’s known as capitalism.

They provide entertainment that someone is willing to pay for.

When no one pays,they’ll stop.

No, it’s that they consistently validate Biblical truths in their lyrics.

I dunno...maybe it’s just a whole lotta fun?

Yeah it's a lot of fun, but when the chicks have turned into hens and are throwing their Depends instead of panties on stage, it's time to go...

You would be surprised as to how many young people go to their shows, even now.

Black Sabbath have taken the best “new” rock band (they’ve actually been around several years now) out with them on this tour: Rival Sons

Well...I just saw Heart, Joan Jett and Cheap Trick last night at the White River Amphitheater here in Puget Sound. ALL the bands were great! Ann Wilson just turned 65 in June and STILL has the best female voice in rock. Nancy was my inspiration to start playing guitar 37 years ago. PROUDLY wearing my Heart World Tour t-shirt today.

Heart has been my favorite band since the 70s. Ann has still got it. I can’t stand their politics, but they sure can sing/play. I also follow the other original members, 2 of whom (bassist and drummer) play in Heart by Heart up your way.

Not too keen on their politics, either. However, if I judged every artist on THAT, I’d be stuck listening to Hank Williams! I have heard of Heart by Heart, but haven’t had the chance to see them. Didn’t know Fossen and Derosier were part of the lineup. Cool!
