He and Gilda, together again. When she died a bit of Gene was lost with her. RIP, sir. Your contribution will not be forgotten.

I like all of his movies and will add Silver Streak to the list of ‘must see’ movies.

Agreed! - first thing I thought of. The jail scene was a genius at work.

Thanks for posting that.

"Young Frank’en’Stein for me..."

There is nothing like Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle doing "Puttin' on the Ritz" song and dance routine.

One of the best scenes in “Frisco Kid” was when Wilder, as the rabbi, was staked out on the ground by the Indians who had captured him and his Torah.

The Indian Chief, played by old gangster-style actor Val Basiglio (sp), asked Wilder if the scroll was important to him and if he would die for it. Wilder replied “Yes”.

Then Basiglio said, “I’ve read the whole thing and I didn’t understand a single word”. (paraphrased). It was in Hebrew!!

True story: On a bus going up N. Broad St. in Phila (back in the 60’s when I went to Temple Un), someone had left a newspaper on a seat and several riders were trying to figure out what kind it was.

Each person offered a guess as to what language the paper was in, finally concurring on Chinese.

IT WAS A YIDDISH NEWSPAPER!

I had to get off the bus in order not to laugh out loud. At least they gave it the old college try.

The Rain speech!

The Frisco Kid. A Polish rabbi, played by Wilder, wanders through the Old West on his way to lead a synagogue in San Francisco. On the way he is nearly burnt at the stake by Indians, robs a bank and is almost killed by outlaws and wrestles Harrison Ford in wet long underwear.

Chief Gray Cloud: [in reference to Avram’s god] What does he do?
Avram: He… He can do anything!
Chief Gray Cloud: Then why can’t he make rain?
Avram: Because he doesn’t make rain. He gives us strength when we’re suffering. He gives us compassion when all that we feel is hatred. He gives us courage when we’re searching around blindly like little mice in the darkness… but He does not make rain!
[Thunder and lightning begin, followed by a downpour]
Avram: Of course… sometimes, just like that, he’ll change His mind.

Classic! Boyle was another lost talent.

“Avram: Of course… sometimes, just like that, he’ll change His mind.”

THAT was a favorite line around our house for a LONG time.

“Really did not realize Gene was that old.”

Neither did I. Thought him to be a spring chicken, about my age. But 83. No way! Impossible. Madeline, Gilda, Gene all three made laughter come out easily. Gene will be missed just as much as the two women. Strange as it may be. After Gilda died, had thought that Gene had died as well. Perhaps because he was so seldom seen. It was only a short time ago that it was realized he was still alive. And now this.

Hells bells, they couldn’t make a lot of movies today.

Can you imagine Blazing Saddles being made today?

I believe one of his first movies was as a young man with his girl who has his car stolen by Bonnie and Clyde. So he sets off to recover the car.
