Orange is the New Black might work for you.
Also check out Grace and Frankie (Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin)
If you like historical costume fare I recommend Dr. Thorne the new Julian Fellows production (adapted from Trollope).
Its lighthearted, fast paced and the costumes and sets are great.
Why streaming?
Why not download and watch?
I don’t understand this love of streaming (except for live events). Please, someone explain it.
I download and watch. There’s a much better selection.

Corner Gas - YouTube (Canadian Sitcom)
“The sleepy Saskatchewan town of Dog River is in the middle of nowhere, and the residents like it that way just fine. Brent’s the guy who owns the only gas station around, and it happens to be attached to the only coffee shop. Police officers Davis and Karen are always on the prowl in this little nook of a prairie town.”
I still like Corner Gas, a Canadian Show, someone suggest to me several years back.
Oops, wanted to add Youtube i believe has all 8? seasons.
We’re enjoying “Heartland” on Netflix. Lots of horses.
“A multi-generational saga set in Alberta, Canada and centered on a family getting through life together in both happy and trying times.”
Netflix has tens of thousands of movies and tv series of all types. It is just a matter of taking some time to go through their listings.
AP has a good, increasing catalog, too.
I filter out nearly 90% of the junk entertainment, but I manage to keep 50 to 100 titles in both my AP and Netflix queues.
AP has an increasing number of British TV series.
I watch AP and Netflix 10 times more than I watch the 100 cable TV channels. Much of that has to do with the incessant commercials on TV, however.
instantwatcher.com allows you to search through the AP and Netflix catalogs by several selected criteria.
“Doc Martin” is good fun. We happily binge-watched all 7 or 8 seasons.
“Trials and tribulations of a socially challenged doctor in Cornwall, England.”
“Lie to me” (Netflix)
“Heroes” (Netflix)
“Person of Interest” (Netflix)
“Leverage” 2 thumbs up (Netflix)
“Limitless” (Netflix)
Many others on Netflix... its not all dark.
Once u start watching stuff on Netflix, it starts tailoring itself to the kind of shows you like.
Subscribe to TCM. Great old movies right before bedtime.
Take a look at Justified, it was outstanding .
Bluebloods is pretty darn good...
Man in the High Castle was unreal. Just one of the finest sci-fi-ish shows ever made.
Versailles is a bit risque (understatement), but I like historic dramas, and these guys did a good job on the story
Stranger Things was also one of my favorites. They nailed the 80s so well, I felt like I was in my old neighborhood again. Still have to finish the season.
Most every tv channel will have their shows online.
A no brainer would be pre-80s sitcoms.
I tried Friday Night Lights and could not get past episode 5.....very boring. I am currently watching Southland on Hulu.....GREAT show.
Try anything from the Hallmark Channel. It’s all pretty light weight and easy to watch.
Give a look at acorn.tv
You can stream all the British shows, sure there are the “darker” shows, but most are present and past British series. We really enjoy the British series.
A lot of light fare, some fascinating documentaries, plus British spy and crime dramas.
Go to acorn.tv Click on browse the shows and all of their series will come up. You can try it for a month, free of charge. After your month, I believe it’s $4.95 per month. If you have Amazon Prime, you can also subscribe to the channel through them...it might be a buck cheaper that way.
What I like about British programing is a Season will often consist of 4 episodes. So Foyle’s War, for instance, has been on for 9 seasons, but each season is only 4 episodes, but each is 2 hours in length. Makes for enjoyable watching like you were sitting down to watch a movie.
One of my favorite lighter shows on the channel is a spoof of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, called Lost in Austen. Perfect entertainment if you’re an Austen fan.
When Calls the Heart is on Netflix. It is directed by Michael Landon Jr. and it shows.
Also Foyle’s War, wonderfully acted, amazingly produced.
