Could this be the end of Alzheimer's ?

A revolutionary drug that could stop people from ever developing Alzheimer’s disease has been unveiled by scientists.

Trials have produced ‘unprecedented’ results and the medicine has been hailed as a potential game-changer in the fight against the cruel disease.

In future, healthy pensioners could be prescribed the drug to ward off dementia, in much the same way as statins are given today to those at risk of heart attacks.

One British expert described the drug, which is about to be tested in hospitals around the UK, as the best yet, others called it ‘ingenious’ work with ‘tantalising’ results. And a US doctor hailed it as the best news in his 25-year career.

Existing drugs are of limited benefit and despite billions of pounds being spent on research, no new medicines have hit the market in more than a decade.

While current therapies ease the symptoms, aducanumab tackles the underlying damage in the brain, raising hopes it will be the first to alter the course of the disease.

It contains an antibody that homes in on amyloid, the protein that clogs the brain in Alzheimer's, poisoning and killing the cells.

In preliminary trials, involving 165 people in the early stages of the disease, the Swiss-designed drug triggered the removal of amyloid from the brain.

And in men and women given a monthly infusion of a high dose of the drug, the amyloid all but vanished after a year.

This ‘unprecedented’ effect was deemed so significant that the results have been published in Nature the world’s top science journal.

Other amyloid-busting antibodies have been tried before.

But aducanumab, which is based on antibodies naturally made by pensioners who seem to be immune to Alzheimer’s, is said to be the best yet.

It is thought it is better at getting into the brain and more likely to zero in on the damaging amyloid than previous drugs. (more information at news source)

We can but hope.

A disease of near unparalleled evil.

Unlike other medications, it doesn't treat the symptoms , it cures the disease.

Good!!

Because many of the 300k soldiers with brain injuries are more likely to develop alzheimer’s.

I could probably use a batch in several years too!!!

One problem, this statement has been proven untrue, I believe.

Agreed.

How long to US if it works and gets approved there.

I’m afraid to ask.

Funny you mention that. The jobs that are available for Alzheimer’s are very low pay jobs. This is why they have found a cure for Alzheimer’s but not cancer which has high paying jobs. Diabetes is another place where a cure will never happen due to the high paying jobs and medications. Alzheimer’s was a cheap one to find a cure for which the government gave the ok to.

The Swiss will have the patent on the drug and will be charging $600 bucks a pill (or more, if the demand remains high). We will see Yahoo News sob stories on the evil Swiss pharma price gouging innocent Americans of their fixed social security money.

I watched the same video, where she almost fell out of her van, only to be caught by a secret service guy. And she expects to be president?

Oh, wait a minute, am I on the right thread?

If this is true, one of the next big (and I mean BIG) issues in this country will be the great demand for the drug vs. the long FDA approval journey most drugs have to go thru before they are allowed to be prescribed.

Given the great damage that victims of this disease (and their families) suffer I can foresee literally (and I’m using that word correctly) riots in the streets over this.

I hope it’s true and I wish I could get my mom into a trial but they are in England.
