The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk will begin a ten-month, $12 million improvement project scheduled to begin just after Labor Day.
Drawings released this week reveal a new main entrance and look for a section of the Boardwalk between Neptunes Kingdom and Undertow roller coaster.
The project will replace a narrow walkway near Neptunes Kingdom, include a state-of-the-art ticketing windows, and fresh looks for several games, concessions and attractions including Fright Walk and Lazer Maze, Boardwalk officials said.
"The unique character of the Boardwalk will be maintained and improved because nostalgia and history are such an important part of our story, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk president Karl Rice said in a statement.
Bay Area contractors including William S. Bagnall Architects, Slatter Construction and Nielsen Studios are working on the project. Roto, an Ohio design firm specializing in plans for some of the worlds largest theme parks, worked with Boardwalk staff to design the project which will connect the classic Moorish-style of the Cocoanut Grove building with the more colorful, eclectic style of the Boardwalk, according to Boardwalk statement.
The project is scheduled for completion by summer 2017. For more information and a look at the project design, click here.
THAT’S GREAT!!!!!!!!!! /s
Oh look! An article of news about liberals spending other people’s money.
Who is paying for it and who is getting the receipts?
Spent a large portion of my youth in and around there.
You do know there can be 8 foot Blue Sharks 30 yards off the beach...
I do not go into the water any more there, except in a boat.
I lived near the lighthouse and Steamers for a couple years in my 20s. Good times.
The Catalyst, O.T. Price’s, the Kuumbwa.....great music scene.
Just as long as they never get rid of the Skee Ball.
There were many great venues back then, we were spoiled and didn’t know it.
I’m in Bonny Doon since 1974
We have gone there for years and yes, it they need it. Our kids are teenagers and don’t think much of it like they used to, those, I am quickly learning were the good old days.
OWNERSHIP. The Boardwalk, Cocoanut Grove, Carousel Beach Inn, Sea & Sand Inn, and Boardwalk Bowl are owned and operated by the Santa Cruz Seaside Company, a private corporation.
the owners - Santa Cruz Seaside Company, a private corporation.
Went there on our Honeymoon in 1963,spent much time there with our Daughters growing up, and will be returning there next week to celebrate 53rd Anniversary. Lots of good Memories, and who could forget Beach Street Revival in 80s and 90s.
The way it should be.
We took the kids 3-4 times a summer it was great fun, clean, wholesome, they employee the local teenagers, place always was nice, no way a govt operation, even a restaurant and bar at the end - mom and dad can grab a cocktail and have no worries about school age kids there on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. A small slice of real America right smack in the middle of Santa Cruz.
Will any of the boardwalk be open during renovation?
OK then, thanks for that.
Widen the sidewalk across the railroad trestle...
