I saw some re-runs of his TV show a few years back. Unlike a lot of shows from that era, it did not hold up. A little ridiculous at times.
He was probably a decent guy but pushed gun control really hard.
RIP.
All the older, good guys are almost gone.
Hie bio says he was a republican.....
Another strong and masculine star from Hollywood’s Golden Age is gone. RIP, Mr. O’Brian.
I read the same thing about Jack Lord (Hawaii Five-O). One day at the gun club that I shoot at here, I found a 1970s issue of “American Rifleman” laying around the clubhouse and it had a report on Lord very definitely in favour of banning handguns.
I can just see their agents and other people in Hollyweird even back then telling ones like Lord and O’Brian that it would be this nice little bit of gesture P.R. as actors who portrayed cops or western heroes who’d favour gun control in real life.
I always liked him. He starred in John Wayne’s last movie, The Shootist.
I think Have Gun- Will Travel was one of the best out there. Excellent plot lines for a half hour show.
Yeah, I think Hugh was quite the anti-gunner. I remember many years ago he did an anti-war PSA.
I remember one of his “Wyatt Earp” shows in the ‘50s when he drew his Buntline and hit a bad guy over the head with it.
The bad guy had to be wearing some kind of protection under his western hat because the barrel of Wyatt’s Buntline was bent. He realized it and put the gun down to his side where it couldn’t be seen any longer and they didn’t reshoot the scene.
RIP, Mr. O’Brian.
The real Wyatt Earp demanded the cowboys who came to Dodge and liked to shoot up the town for fun surrender their guns, don’t know about O’brien’s beliefs. I wasn’t like the cowboys off of months on the cattle trails acted responsibly with their firearms, just the opposite.
And, not historically accurate, but that would largely be the fault of the scriptwriters, and not O'Brian...
the infowarrior
Richard Boone starred in that series.
Hugh O’Brian-brave courageous and bold, long live his fame and long live his oh, whatever.
One of my OTA channels shows this on weekdays.
So few of the good ones left....RIP.
I used to work Dodge City when I lived in Western Kansas.
The city had a law banning guns North of the Arkansas River. In actual fact it only applied to the Cowboys. The reason was the same as now.
They wanted the people in power (the saloon owners etc.) to be able to rob the Cowboys with impunity.
Yes, I know.
I was comparing it to The L and T of Wyatt Earp.
My wife and I went to “A Gathering of Guns” several years ago in Memphis. We had the honor of having dinner with Hugh. He was a real gentleman. RIP
He also played Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Divito’s father in Twins. That’s about it.
Hey! Consider your audience.
Wyatt Earp! Wyatt Earp! Brave Courageous and Bold!
Long live his name, and long live his glory, and long may his story be told!
Wyatt Earp was a pimp and a thief - so were his brothers
