A police department in Ohio has shared on Facebook disturbing photos of a man and woman passed out in a car with a toddler in the backseat after the pair had allegedly overdosed on heroin.

The unsettling images appeared on the City of East Liverpool's social media page on Thursday.

Officials say they decided to make the photos public to raise awareness of the heroin epidemic in the state, and also to try and deter people from using drugs while having children in their care.

Addiction to opioids such as heroin, morphine, fentanyl and codeine in the US has reached the proportions of a full-blown epidemic in recent years.

In Ohio, which has been among the states hardest hit by the overdose epidemic, there were 3,000 unintentional drug overdoses last year, at an average of eight per day.

I'm to the point where I don't know what to say except that what we are doing obviously isn't working. We should pick one of the following models and follow it for awhile and gauge the results:

1. The Singapore solution where drug dealers are hanged and users which repeatedly fail rehab are exiled to an offshore island to mostly fend for themselves.
   
2. The Portugal solution where drug users register and get their fix provided at nominal cost, thereby destroying the market for drug dealing.

Either way would work better than the WOD status quo, though I personally prefer #1. The Singaporeans are far more industrious than the Portuguese.

I saw a news report of a high school girlfriend, (about 15 years after graduating and not seeing her since) getting arrested for meth. She had gotten knocked up and kept using. She was a little younger than me but looked like she was in her 60s. Horrible stuff.

I have zero sympathy for heroin addicts. Most will anything for their next fix - literally anything. They have become sub-human while they are using.

The druggies usually buy heroin in a city, inject it immediately, and then drive back to their home in the suburbs. We've had numerous heroin-related freeway crashes in my city. Nice, eh?

A few years ago I had a case involving two sisters. One was married to a doctor and was quite fit. The other was a meth-head. The meth-head almost looked old enough to be her sister’s mother.

There is a very long history on the Singapore solution dating back to 1965. Lots of resources on the internet as well. Bottom line is that one out of ten Singaporeans was an opiate drug addict in 1965; one out of ten is a legitimate millionaire today.

How long has the Portugal solution been tried? What do they do with all the useless druggies their soft approach produces? If you have any good data or links, I'd be willing to educate myself further. It may not be ideal, but I still think it beats the WOD status quo which we have here.
