All 314 Bruce Springsteen Songs, Ranked From Worst to Best
New York Magazine ^ | Caryn Rose

1. "Born to Run," Born to Run. The song that earns every great cliché about rock and roll. It is escape, it is freedom, it is four-chord liberation. If you don't like "Born to Run," you don't like Bruce Springsteen. The song distills every single element of Springsteen's sound into four-and-a-half minutes, which contains the essential question his entire catalogue tries to answer: "I want to know if love is real."* The performance is stellar. Tallent's bass is more complex than you'd think, sometimes vibrating like a car engine, other times fluid and melodic, and he leads the charge for the last minute and 15 seconds. Federici swoops in and out with such power and grace, especially the way his organ comes in at "Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims." After his initial opening attack, Ernest "Boom" Carter is sitting back there on drums, swinging away. (It would be Boom's sole appearance on a Springsteen track.) Bruce's voice is warm and sad and sexy and full of soul, and Clemons's solo is a reveille, a call to arms. "Born to Run" was Sancious's swan song before leaving the E Street Band, and his piano melodies are ethereal and majestic. What a way to go.

He has no talent. The only good thing about his music is when he shuts up and his excellent band can be heard. Little Steve, Southside Johnny...

Bruce sucks and is the boss of no one.

Springsteen was alright with me until I figured out he’s an anti-American moron.

If I close my eyes and pretend it’s not a jackass singing, I like Hungry Heart, Dancing in the Dark, Glory Days and Secret Garden (not necessarily in that order).

Unfortunately, I can’t get past the jackass factor enough to ever buy any of his albums, or even singles.

Only song of his I really like is “Nebraska”, the title song from the “Nebraska” album. It has a spare, stripped-down sound that works a lot better for me than Springsteen’s usual East Coast ballad rocker sound. Good lyrics, too, for a song about a serial killer

Another great song from that album is Used Cars.

Shouldn’t ranking be from bad to worst?

The guy was, at best; mediocre but generally played to the level of a frat party band

Bob Seger owns this guy....he never got the press like Bruce, but until the mid-80s he outsold him in record sales & concert tickets. Then Seger slowed down & semi-retired in the mid-90s until his return in 2006. Seger has the better voice, by far & writes just as well, or better than Bruce ever did.

A film producer buddy of mine said it back in the 80s: “Springsteen is The Boss, but Seger is The Best!”

“Dancing in the Dark” is about the only song I ever liked by Springsteen.

Yup...Bob is very talented. Quick story: Bruce went to Seger when he was writing “The River” asking how he could change his style to get more hit singles because he was not getting half the radio play Seger was getting. Bob is an excellent singer/songwriter. His early stuff before 75 is off the charts good.

Some good memories from high school days. Too bad he polluted them with his leftist political views.

How do they rank them all worst?

There are artists I like, there are artists I don’t like, Sprinsteen in one of about three that I refuse to ever listen to.

No offense intended, but Springsteen is a liberal turd of the highest order. No thanks.
