All 314 Bruce Springsteen Songs, Ranked From Worst to Best
New York Magazine ^ | Caryn Rose

1. "Born to Run," Born to Run. The song that earns every great cliché about rock and roll. It is escape, it is freedom, it is four-chord liberation. If you don't like "Born to Run," you don't like Bruce Springsteen. The song distills every single element of Springsteen's sound into four-and-a-half minutes, which contains the essential question his entire catalogue tries to answer: "I want to know if love is real."* The performance is stellar. Tallent's bass is more complex than you'd think, sometimes vibrating like a car engine, other times fluid and melodic, and he leads the charge for the last minute and 15 seconds. Federici swoops in and out with such power and grace, especially the way his organ comes in at "Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims." After his initial opening attack, Ernest "Boom" Carter is sitting back there on drums, swinging away. (It would be Boom's sole appearance on a Springsteen track.) Bruce's voice is warm and sad and sexy and full of soul, and Clemons's solo is a reveille, a call to arms. "Born to Run" was Sancious's swan song before leaving the E Street Band, and his piano melodies are ethereal and majestic. What a way to go.

Only song of his I really like is “Nebraska”, the title song from the “Nebraska” album. It has a spare, stripped-down sound that works a lot better for me than Springsteen’s usual East Coast ballad rocker sound. Good lyrics, too, for a song about a serial killer.

I used to like some of Springsteen’s music, and then he told me what an idiot he is and I can’t listen to it anymore.

If you don't like "Born to Run," you don't like Bruce Springsteen.

I loathe "Born to Run."

This may not be the very best day to reminisce about his recording career. I suppose for real fans, it doesn’t matter.

He is a moron, but he has some great songs. My favorites are My Hometown, Thunder Road, The River, and Blinded by the Light (Manfred Mann’s version).

I wish singers , actors, and athletes would just entertain us. I get sick of being lectured by some high school dropout or someone with a performing arts degree lecture me on politics and foreign affairs. You are the modern day court jesters, shut up and entertain me.

“I loathe “Born to Run.””

I always thought the name of the song was “Bow to Ra”. I can’t understand a word this moron spews in anything he’s recorded.

The xylophone isn’t bad in that song though. The drums, guitar, vocals, and lyrics are all downright horrible.

My husband use to be a BIG fan and played Springsteen's annoying music all the time.

My ears were thrilled when he finally got over Bruce and stopped playing his records/tapes/cds.

I remember a comedian doing his impersonation of Loose Bedspring singing "99 Botles of Beer". It went something like ...

99 bottle of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer. 1 falls down, they shut the factory down, no one has a job no more"
