I'm choosing 'stop it'. Everything then moves. But the computer jerks up and down during the wait time for varying lengths until the message comes. Thanks,

PS I use windows 10.

Sounds like Malware to me.

Download Malwarebytes: https://www.malwarebytes.com/

Run their program and consider subscribing for constant monitoring.

Download, install, and scan your system using

1) Avast anti virus
2) MalwareBytes
3) AdBlocker Plus
4) CCleaner

every Freeper should have all four

Most likely the website is using javascript that is poorly written and getting stuck in an endless loop that is freezing your machine.

Either stop going to that website, or install a script-blocker like NoScript for Firefox and it should fix the issue (though with a script blocker you will need to remember to enable scripts on every “safe” website that you visit because almost every website uses scripts nowadays).

I see that a lot with Adobe Flash. On occasion I go into Task Manager and do an “end-task” (stop the application) to free up RAM and get things going again.

I got onto a malicious page that wouldn’t let me off of it.
I was using Microsoft Edge, which I have set to return to the most recent page loaded when I start the browser. You can see where this is going.

I used task manager to get out of the browser, but when I reopened Edge, it went right back to the malicious page. What a PITA. Eventually, I fixed it by launching the browser while furiously tapping the escape key.

Windows 10 can be "reset" to address many problems. This How-To Geek article: How to Easily Reinstall Windows 10 Without the Bloatware can explain how to do this better than I can.

If you are running Firefox, I suggest you install No Script plugin to manage the Java scripts that are allowed. It has really helped me.

Another thing would be to login on websites with https: Login (secure shell). That has helped me. But note, I run Linux not Windows.

I also set up networking for TLS (Terminal Level Security instead of SSH).

And when all else fails, unplug the network cable. I’ve had to do that many times.
