A heartbroken son remembered his murdered 95-year-old father as an adventurer beloved by all who knew him as the two suspects held in connection with his slaying in Orange are set to appear before a judge in Virginia.

“He had a great personality, forever an optimist,” Thomas Harty, 64, told the Herald about his late father, also named Thomas. “He lived by the theory of Henry Ford. He said, ‘If you believe you can do something, or you believe you can’t, you’ll be right.’

“He always thought he could,” Harty said.

Orange, Athol, Gardner, all former mill/manufacturing towns that are sunken in depression and just barely functioning. As recently as last year, the general recommendation was to not buy a house in that area because you’d likely be stuck with it forever. Property’s cheap there, but between the crippled town economies and the overbearing MA laws, no one wants to be there, and most of those who are stuck there are either desperate to get out, or are lowlifes like these two.

“If you believe you can do something, or believe you can’t, you’re probably right.”

Great quote. Wish I had known the man.

I did know the man he was a great family man and a dedicated boy scout leader. He was an inspiration to men and boys. A real man’s man if you will. At his age he could beat most men half his age up any of the White Mountains.
I am 61 years old and this is the most hedious tragic thing ever to happen in Orange Ma. IMO.

What I have found on a search:

The Athol Daily News reported that two days before the home invasion the suspects had been arrested by Orange police after a car was reported stolen on East River Street. Ms. Smith was later released on bail and was scheduled for arraignment Oct. 7, according to the newspaper. Mr. Hart was arraigned Oct. 4. No further information on the case was available Monday.

Mr. Hart is originally from Pennsylvania, according to an Athol woman who said she is familiar with the pair. The woman, who asked not to be identified, said Ms. Smith had a troubled upbringing in Athol and found more trouble in Alaska before a recent move back to Athol.
