Costa Rica Is Shutting Down All Zoos And Freeing Every Animal In Captivity

Costa Rica has announced that it will be the first country in the world to shut down its zoos and free the captive animals they hold. Costa Rica is an especially biodiverse country, holding about 4% of the world's known species. Sadly, the country is contractually obligated to keep two of its zoos open for another decade. Still, after that, they plan to shut it down in favor of a cage-free habitat for the animals to live in.

Treehugger reports that the nation, which also recently banned hunting for sport, will close the last two zoos in the next 10 years and give the animals a more natural habitat in which to exist. They want to convey to the world that they respect and care for wild animals.

So the animals can eat each other?

My wife’s grandfather had prized minks for pelt. The liberals let them go after he died. The minks did not know how to survive and most were run over within weeks. one are known to have survived the first winter.

No. In fact, I’ve never even ventured out of the country or flown on an airplane.

I’d pay good money for a ticket to view certain politicians in steel cages.

And this time, we get to throw poop at THEM

"I hate zoos. They stink, it's unnatural"

Generally agree, although exceptions to the rule. Up in Big Bear California they have a small zoo (Moon Ridge) but most all the Animals were injured in the wild, or too familiarized to humans to survive in the wild.

They really do their best to give the animals the best life within their budget to do so. I understand they are expanding to give the animals more space. Bears, wolves, Bison, Deer, Eagles...... really impressive for the small 6 or 7 acres they have.

A twist on an Outer Limits, or was it a Twilight Zone episode with the aliens staring at the Human behind the cage bars.

They need to contact the NC Zoo. It is YUGE and mostly cage free. They have the Lions in very large areas and boast their own Savannah for the Elephants, Rinos and Gazelles.

free the captive animals

I hope they don't have any lions or tigers. Elephants could be a bit iffy, as well.

Put go pros on the large animals and predators and turn ‘em loose in the streets. That’d be a reality show I would watch!

Years ago I read a book by Gerald Durrell who collected for zoos. He went on an expedition to South America (I forget the country) & had gathered most of the animals he was looking for only to be told that the funding had fallen through & the animals had to be released. They opened the cages expecting a mad dash to freedom, but instead they all just sat there. Three squares a day & no danger of being eaten by somebody else isn’t a bad deal.

15 minutes of fame for a few “eco-savvy” politicians,

Extinction for jobs, tourism, naturist and zoologist careers, and MOST IMPORTANT the species that depend on zoos as their last chance for survival.
