At about 2 a.m. Sunday, Cecelia Rivas felt a pain deep in her stomach. She knew the baby was on its way.
She woke her husband up, alerted him to the situation, but soon realized she didnt have everything she needed for her baby boys birth.
I thought it was time to go to Walmart and get some things I needed, said Rivas through a translator.
Rivas told her husband she needed to go to the local Walmart in Payson, but he told her he would go and she could stay. But she disagreed, and told him she was going and he could stay and watch the kids.
She felt her labor pains getting stronger at about 5:30 a.m. while she was checking out, so she made a point to get ready to leave.
But it was too late. Her water broke and the baby was coming. As she was paying, she could feel her babys head, and a woman grabbed her from behind, helping her to the ground.
I just want to say thanks to the lady behind me who helped me, Rivas said.
The woman got Rivas down, made the area clear and essentially prepped for delivery. Before too long, baby Matias was born.
I was really surprised and really scared, Rivas said. But they told me not to worry, and then, my baby was there on my chest.
This was Rivass third child and the labor was relatively short.
The more babies you have, the faster your labors usually tend to go, said Janette Barney, director of labor and delivery at Mountain View Hospital in Payson. Monitor those contractions. If theyre becoming closer together and getting progressively stronger, thats usually the biggest indicator for labor.
Rivas and her baby, Matias Perez, were transported to Mountain View Hospital and are doing well, with a few minor concerns. Barney said Matias was placed on antibiotics when he and his mother arrived, primarily as a precaution.
We look and see if there were any signs of infection the baby was a little cold and did have some respiratory distress initially, she said. But the baby had a turnaround and has done fine since.
Rivas and Matias will likely be released within a week once he has a clean bill of health. Then Matias can meet his two siblings, a 5-year-old sister and a 15-month-old brother.
Everything was such a surprise. He really didnt give me any time, Rivas laughed. But when I saw him, I was so happy.
“I’m in labor baby! Let’s go to the Walmart!”

Yep seems a strange story. She knew she was in labor but needed to make sure she went to Walmart, as opposed to asking her husband to get things they need. Very odd.
Brilliant strategy
“Born on a mountain-top in Tennessee”
has become
“Born at a WalMart in the check-out lane.”
... and it was like 2:30AM or something?
Yeah not exactly the wisest thing to do. But hey, at least she avoided the hospital and doctor's bills, or we did.
How about to go to the hospital first and let hubby go to Walmart... ;-)
“Payson mom” is how the author spells mexi illegal invader, apparently.
She awoke @ 2 A.M. but the baby was delivered @ 5:30 A.M. She either lives a long way from the Walmart or her few things were many things.
Pictures of the birth no doubt will appear on the “Walmartians” site by this afternoon.
OMG that was my first thought, as well (lower hospital bills for us to be stuck with). We must be deplorable!
Exploit Walmart into getting free stuff.
I took me ex to a belated birthday dinner at Red Lobster. She was at nine months, and due in 3 days. Anyway, we decided to celebrate, and she really loaded up on her food order.
As we started to eat, THEN she went into labor. I asked if she wanted to go to the hospital. She said, “Hell no, Imma gonna finish my dinner!”
At that point, her contractions were about 5, then 4, then 3 minutes apart. She’d spear a piece of lobster with her tiny lobster fork, grimace as a contraction passed, and then go on eating. By the time I paid the check, she was at two minutes. Drove to the hospital, and hour later my Son was born.
Gee I wonder why we thought that way. Let me dwell upon that for awhile and I’ll get back to you. 8>)
Nesting behavior meets modern consumerism. Not the first or last baby to be born in Walmart.
