"He believes that it is a piece of the landing gear from a Messerschnmitt ME 262."

ME-262 landing gear:

IF you miscalculated by even a fraction of a second you might end up 1000 feet underground or falling from 10 miles above earth. That is why MY time machine will also be a space ship.

So we just need to figure out the other 249,957 years.

With natural rocks you might assume that when it was formed the radioactive elements were separated from any daughter elements. Then you see the ratio of the original radioactive elements vs. newly formed daughter elements. For example, you compare radium to lead. This wouldn't work quite as well for modern alloys and doubly so after the start of the nuclear age.

Could have been part of the landing gear to an Oben 003 trans time dimensional star module.

“smelt aluminium”

That’s not the issue. Aluminum does not exist in nature as a pure element.

Which is why you have to smelt it to get pure aluminium.

Refining bauxite is not a smelting process.

I think you’re getting confused with the 004.

True. But refining bauxite also doesn’t give you aluminium. It gives you alumina, which must then be further processed into aluminium via smelting, such as the Hall-Herault method.

How does one date daughter elements?

For example example if you have 1 gram of the original and 3 grams of the daughter elements then two half-lives of the original element have passed. That’s why you have to assume the original was pure when starting. If it already had some daughter elements then thing get more complicated.

Spaceships have pretty thin skins. Perhaps a diving bell?

Anyway...would your time machine displace the matter when it appears. I alway envisioned it as becoming part of the matter.

That is why I would get a spaceship that appears in space. Like the Tardis.

It's an aluminum excavator tooth. They're made of aluminum so that they do not create sparks if they hit anything flammable or wires or fuel tanks...
