Would You Be The Hero During A Rampage Shooting?

USA –-(Ammoland.com)- This appears to be one of the most talked about situations, as far as concealed carry is concerned.

For this, I don’t believe there is a simple answer. But this is what I tell those who ask.

My job, my one and only job, the only thing I’m worrying about is to keep me and mine safe. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. If shooting starts, living in Condition Yellow I know where exits are. I know where elevators, staircases and escalators are.

And I’m getting me and mine out. Period.

Now that may sound crass to many. It may sound cold and detached, but that’s it in a nutshell – and I don’t owe anyone an explanation.

Everyone has the ability to defend themselves. As a matter of fact, it’s your personal responsibility to defend yourself – not mine, not the Police, not the Governments – it’s yours.

Now with that being said, after my family and friends are safe, then the decision to take on a shooter would depend on the circumstances at that time – and at that time they may be undefinable.

It is possible that an active shooter / rampage shooter situation could break out right in front of you and there may be an opportunity to end it right there – but what if you miss and are shot, how will your spouse, your children, your grandchildren make it to safety? Or will they be mowed down with the others?

The only situation I believe I would run into headlong, is an active shooter at a school (or anyplace children were present) where I know the Police have not arrived. Then?

I’m in. Devil be damned.

Stay Safe and Carry Responsibly,
Hipshot – NewGunnerJournal.

I carry for me and mine. There have been times when, due to circumstances, I considered that obligation to extend a bit but those were specific situations and not public.

Priorities in the event of a shooter:

1) Stay alive.
2) Keep my loved ones alive.
3) Keep others alive
4) Kill the braindead sh_tstain.

The first two are inextricably intertwined. I stay alive to keep them alive. If I escape and take them with me and have time to go back for others, I will. But it's unlikely I'll go back to do the cops' job for them.

On the other hand, if the POS makes 1 or 2 impossible, then 4 becomes a much higher priority.

Throwing up isn’t a problem for me. I have seen several lifetimes of dead bodies.

One of my nurses asked me once if I could “really shoot someone”. I did not even blink. I told her, “Hell, I have killed people by ACCIDENT. That was hard to get over. Killing someone who needs it on purpose would not bother me a bit.”

How would it affect your family if you were killed engaging a nutcase? #1 They would lose the one person who makes it a 24/7/365 responsibility to protect them from all harm. Who is going to step up to fill for you? Do they have your skills and experience?

I advise you to reconsider.

I agree with you but it doesn’t include putting myself in danger. If I had a clear shot to his brain would I take it? Yes, definitely. I love my Crimson Trace Laser sights!

I’m 70 not 20. My days of firefights are hopefully done with.

The flip side of the age question is we have less to lose - whether facing a nutcase/jihadist or a leftist enemy of our Constitution. If it comes down to my life or the lives/freedom of several people much younger, at some point taking action may become worth the risk. I'm not saying you're wrong, just presenting another perspective.

There is far too many fools, idiots and Muslims in this world for me to see everyone as my family.

It's okay. Jesus often said His teachings were optional.

I agree. The difference between a concealed carry permit and a police badge is a sworn duty to “protect and serve.”

There is no "sworn duty to protect and serve". The SCOTUS has ruled police are under no obligation to stop a crime.

See: Justices Rule Police Do Not Have a Constitutional Duty to Protect Someone

Cops today are really nothing more than crime scene investigators - by design. If it were otherwise they would be engaged in high crime areas not looking for people talking on cell phones in their cars.

There is no correct answer. The point is consider your own rules of engagement should the need arise. My own ROE’s are very similar to the author’s.

Armed robbery? I’ll be a good witness. He can have the money until the cops catch up with him. “Get in the car (for any reason, including “drive to an ATM”), the fight’s on.

An active shooter in a place where able-bodied adults are able to act for self-preservation, like say a crowded movie theater? I’m getting my people out safely, and will be a good witness for LE which is surely on its way.

A Newtown type of scenario? Well, that’s a different matter — people too young or otherwise unable to act in self preservation, well, my life will take a back seat. As long as my family’s safe, I’m calling it in, and then going in.

The point is, you can pre-game a lot of scenarios. The ones in which you avoid trouble, or can avoid contact with the enemy are more numerous, but some you have to decide in advance. You won’t have time in the heat of battle to make a thoughtful analysis.

Still, what’s right is up to every individual: your health, your weaponry, you skill at arms, the totality of the circumstances which are unique to you.

i have been asked that by non gun people. by the time i question them on ALL the specifics of their 8 word scenario, they aren’t interested in the answer. works every time.

The compact “carry” handgun is a very short range weapon.

Only a complete fool would attempt a long range shot to take out a mass shooter. It would risk an innocent death, and a manslaughter conviction for you.

If you are not close enough for a high percentage shot, the best policy would be lay low behind cover for a better opportunity to develop.

Heroics can be very foolish.

If we define hiding behind a cement barrier and then running away while screaming like a little girl as heroic, then I will be very heroic.

Seriously, a friend of mine was one of the uniformed cops at the Boynton Mall in Boynton Beach, Florida, in 2006. He was also an Iraq veteran. He said he dropped to one knee and aimed his pistol.

“I had the guy.”

He said he didn’t dare shoot because of all the people running around and the shooter didn’t stand still.

>> “You either believe that “love one another” thing Jesus said, and see everyone as your family, or you don’t.” <<

How does this platitude answer the question at hand?

You are one man, not an army, Regardless of your desires, there is little that you can do if you are not in close range.

Popping off a long shot could make you part of the problem if you don’t get lucky.

You don’t run to anything in a crowd.

You have to move stealth-fully to have much chance for success.

If you have a head, use it!
