Japanese Climber Junko Tabei, First Woman To Conquer Mount Everest, Dies At 77
NPR ^ | 22 Oct 2016 | BILL CHAPPELL

Posted on 10/22/2016 10:34:05 AM PDT by DUMBGRUNT

The expedition Tabei helped lead on Everest was made entirely of women (not including six Sherpas). She also helped find sponsorship — although in many cases, "We were told we should be raising children instead," she said in 2012.

Tabei downplayed her achievement — "I was the 36th person to climb Everest," she told Sports Illustrated.

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. God Himself is not secure, having given man dominion over His works! Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold. Faith alone defends. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable." H Keller

Yes, I spent many years on rock and ice.

Nonsense! Hillary was the first!

"Since at least 1995, Hillary claimed that her mother named her after Sir Edmund Hillary, the first climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Bill even mentioned this anecdote in his autobiography. The only problem, Hillary was born in 1947 and Sir Edmund did complete his historic feat until 1953. Perhaps Hillary’s mother was clairvoyant?"

By Monday morning: Hillary surprised MSNBC reporter by saying
“Did I ever mention that my parents first considered the name “Junko” as my middle name? In honor of Junko Tabei. Sadly, they were forced to drop the idea when the head nurse refused to write in any ‘Japanese sounding’ name for a caucasian baby. I thought I had told you before!”

Was that before, or after she tried to enlist in the Marines?

Are Sherpa considered part of an expedition or not? I always thought they were, but I'm not a climber.

Seems like semantics....."This is an all-girls class, except for the boys in the class."

I think it was after her attempt to join the Marines, but before that incident at the airport where she had to duck and run while being fired upon.

Didn’t Hillary also want to be an astronaut???

But allegedly was told by NASA that they didn’t take women astronauts in those days????

"I was the 36th person to climb Everest,"

Ever in the long history of mankind, huh. Her middle name must be Hillary.

So they went with Hillary Diane.
That is so ‘Park Ridge’!

1950’s Park Ridge may have allowed a Japanese gardener to trim the bushes, maybe?

Being from Glenview (just up the road) and having worked in High School for a ‘high end’ landscaper, near zero minorities around. The guy I worked for had none.

The Naval Air Station had a few.
And some foreign exchange students around.
White bread.

“Are Sherpa considered part of an expedition or not? I always thought they were, but I’m not a climber.”

I share your question. I’m also not a climber.

From what I’ve seen on TV, the Sherpas haul the heaviest supplies, because they are best acclimated to the altitude, and sometimes go before and install the ladders and ropes that the climbers need.

This is not meant to diminish the achievement of walking up there under your own power. But they shouldn’t veer too closely to either “I did it all by myself” or “these women did it hurrah.”

I hear you. I've read a few books about Everest (armchair climber here). Fascinating, but the one thing that strikes me in nearly all cases is the support teams required to get there. It seems most of the forward positioning, trail guide, and heavy lifting is done by Sherpas.

Agree with your assessment to not veer too close to "I did it all by myself."

Depends on who you ask.

I met the oldest guy to climb Everest, at that time. $$$
Never a word about the Sherpas, like they were not there.

Others proudly compare themselves to the Sherpas.

The Sherpas maintain a system of aluminum ladders over the more technical sections.
You still need to be in top condition and have a fat wallet.
I do not think they were using ladders with Tabli?
One minute on ladders. Not osha approved!

When Sir Edmund learned of Her Royal Heinous’ virgin birth, he made a pilgrimage to the manger to witness the miracle of the infant child. He was so moved by the experience that he changed his surname to Hillary.

True story.

Who can really say this isn't Hillary:

She is, after all, wearing a sort of pants suit.

Regarding Mount Everest, Steve Jones, in his book, "Darwin's Ghost." writes on page 252 ... "... the summit of Everest is formed of rocks made in a shallow sea."

Jones' book is a fabulous modern update of Darwin's original work *** based on modern knowledge.

Also has the goofy eyes.

That said, I have seen zero evidence of Ms Clinton ever doing anything physical?

Running serpentine under fire?
