Technically they can carry it, but it is extremely rare, since the animals that commonly carry rabies have about zero chance of catching and biting a squirrel.

One of my sisters was bitten by a squirrel when she was in high school. I don’t think that anything was done to catch the squirrel, because it would have been almost impossible to identify it.
