I agree with the whole of your reply especially your comments about slashing taxes and regulatory burden. In fact, I think these remedies should be applied first and then see whether tariffs are absolutely necessary. That is because even jawboning as Trump as recently so successfully done, is a threat to liberty, smacks of crony capitalism, and is very dangerous.

It is not less dangerous because it is so politically attractive, I understand that 70% of America supports the carrier deal. It is brilliant politically and perhaps should be welcomed as a measure which will improve Trump's standing even before he takes office and removes his deficit in the negatives column.

I would add one thought, and that is that when we seek to "ameliorate the dislocations caused by globalism and trade deals that put us at a disadvantage" we must inevitably sacrifice the interests of some other sector of our economy. The campaign was run and we for the most part here in this forum are still thinking in terms of reforming our trade posture as a free lunch.

Inevitably, one sector will be harmed as another sector is advantaged.

In today's world it appears that, despite the views of many in this forum, we can prosper only if we engage in world trade. That means that we must consider the impact of our trade deals not just on individual sectors of the economy, some of whom will be harmed, but on the whole of society. In other words, we are forced by technology and the state of the world today to engage in modern-day mercantilism. We must do that or we fall behind financially and militarily. Yet to do so threatens capitalism and threatens liberty and inevitably threatens some sectors of the economy.

My plea is that we do this constitutionally, transparently, and in good faith. That is an awful lot to ask of any set of politicians but at least we here on Free Republic should be free to point out the upside and downside on these questions without being accused of treachery.

The fact is Trump’s “adoring fans” fought to defeat Hillary Criminal and her SCOTUS. O/T, but I found the website for my favorite winery in Germany. I visited the place every 4-6 weeks during my tour, it was only a 10 minute drive from my apartment in Traben-Trarbach.

When I contacted them, I learned that they ship to Texas. The transaction was seamless, as we both have PayPal accounts. I bought a mixed case of Spatlese and Auslese, and my total cost including shipping was $200, or about 40% of retail in the US.

I hope there's no tariffs added to the cost of German wine. In case you, or anyone out there is interested, PM me and I'll send you the website.

The winery's been a family run business for over 500 years. His father was a great host, and I'd spend 2-3 hours on every visit. I've opened up a few bottles already, and the memories are as superb as the wine.

I'm not "sacrificing the interests" of the American wine industry, as I've been a member of a local Texas winery for nearly 3 years, and my "official" hobby is wine and viticulture. I'm looking forward to travels to wineries here and abroad upon my retirement (if I ever get there).

I can understand what Trump did, for now. Taxes still need to have those cuts implemented. Then, God willing, he will stop doing this.

Even if tariffs are ultimately deemed necessary, I would like to see a general tariff of no more than 10 percent. (1) We have about 20,000 different tariffs on various things, and this would simply the tariff schedule greatly. (2) Lots of small businesses use foreign inputs, and it would be a shame if their taxes were reduced, but their inputs became significantly more expensive.

Do I infer from that “logic” that only those who are Trump’s supporters are eligible to critique him? By that standard FR should have been pretty much mute when it came to Obamao.

It will be up to his supporters to hold Trump’s feet to the fire whenever he strays from that which is good, unless of course his supporters will deny he ever strays from the path of political righteousness. From what I see recently on FR the latter is far more prevalent than the former.

I think we have to look very carefully at the VAT situation in foreign countries. For example, here in Germany the VAT is 19% which I understand is rebated on exports.

If you didn't vote for Trump, which it is obvious you didn't, you're likely someone that can't offer an objective opinion about him and want him to fail. That is the same type that were being zotted here for months, justifiably so.

Your analogy sucks. Conservatives are supposed to oppose liberals before and after they get into office. Rational conservatives don't help liberals like Hillary win elections by sitting out. You have no credibility as a conservative if you didn't vote for Trump.
