China’s J-20 Stealth Fighter to Challenge F-22 Raptor Supremacy

The state-of-the-art J-20 fifth-generation jet fighter is a key part of the Chinese air force. According to Chinese military expert, Li Li, the J-20 could possibly break the US monopoly on fifth-generation fighters.

During an interview with CCTV, the military expert said that the Chinese jet fighter may exert an even bigger influence than the American F-22 Raptor.

Li Li further said that although the American F-22 Raptor is the first fifth-generation fighter commissioned in an air force, its performance is not satisfactory. She said that the J-20 and Russia’s T-50 will possibly manage to break the Western monopoly and that the J-20 could have a more significant influence than its Western counterparts. Chinese officials maintain that the J-20 will be exclusive to the People’s Liberation Army Air Force.

Although the full specifications of the Chinese fighter are not yet publicly known, some observers expect that the J-20s will be able to match the stealth, radar-evading properties of the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, developed for the US Air Force. The US F-22 stealth fighter is expected to be deployed in the Pacific by the United States.

IIRC, the old argument against the F22 was that the F22 didn't really have a mission since there were no relevant adversaries. Seems like a lot has changed in 10 years.

“its performance is not satisfactory.”

Uh, did she point out where the F-22 is unsatisfactory? No? That’s what I thought! ;-)

Too bad we didn’t go with the YF-23.
Just my opinion.

And we all know how superior “made in China” products are compared to everyone else’s.

I don’t believe the ChiCom’s can build the engine. We are so many years ahead that the F22 will be a legacy aircraft before the J20 is perfected.

I’d have to say that whatever fifth gen aircraft they end up making, it will be superior to the fifth gen aircraft that we’re presently making....since we aren’t presently making any fifth generation aircraft. I can’t help but be reminded of the German Tiger tank of WW2. Nothing was better in the field but, in the end, it lost to allied mass production. The Chinese can out mass produce us. If they ever seriously allied with the Russians against us, it would be even worse.

It is all avionics and BVR. The flight profile for air superiority is no longer dogfighting.

If you need to penetrate deep into enemy airspace to knock out critical command and control assets, stealth is pretty critical.

Even HE wasn’t stupid enough to give them the engines. Even Russia is struggling with engines. From what I’ve read the engines are a major performance issue. They just can’t run at sustained high thrust.

Upgrades to the F22 has languished at the expense of the F35.

Isn’t it great that we helped make them become the dominant economic power on Earth?

Something they were incapable of 30 years ago?

Was supposed to make them LESS of a threat.

That worked out real well, huh?

Every time I look at the J-20 pictures the proportions look all wrong. It looks like it is stretched out of proportion

It is a very large plane in some of the pictures. Looking at the cockpit as similar in appearance and dimensions to the F-22, the aft fuselage looks to be larger than the FB-111.

The vertical stabs are too small and even with the strakes it probably would have poor lateral performance characteristics.

The round nozzles also raise questions about thrust vectoring. Combined with the length of the fuselage this thing doesn't likely exhibit good pitch up authority. The canards may be an attempt to help lever it through a pitch changing maneuver but it would still be quite a ride. Sitting as far forward as the picture shows, the pilot would be catapulted around the CG like a skinny kid on a teeter totter.

I, too, thought the YF-23 was the better one of the two...
