A prominent Hasidic leader raised campaign funds for Mayor de Blasio while allegedly defrauding the food stamp program for $30,000.
Yitzchok (Isaac) Sofer hosted a de Blasio fund-raiser in October 2013 and is a leader in the Satmar group that backed the mayor just before the September 2013 primary.
In a complaint unsealed in Brooklyn Federal Court Thursday, Sofer was charged with unlawfully collecting Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) funds from late 2013 through June of this year.
In a complaint filed by Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Robert Capers, Sofer was charged with lying about his income to fraudulently get more than $30,000 in food stamps over four years.
He claimed on a life insurance application he was making $100,000 a year and owned $600,000 in assets, but told the city he was earning $13,000 a year and had no other financial assets. . .

small over-sight
Maybe he needed the food stamps. I mean, he was so busy raising $$$$ for de Blasio that he didn’t have time to work a real job . . . . . . . . .
Well this is federal cash, which means MY MONEY. I’m all for the weird mayor and his cronies scamming the tax payers of NYC, though.
Bet any amount of money he skates.
“He claimed on a life insurance application he was making $100,000 a year and owned $600,000 in assets, but told the city he was earning $13,000 a year and had no other financial assets. .”
Maybe Sofer was just trying to establish some street cred with Comrade de Blasio.
De Blasio’s base is basically the people who are net recipients of government money.
These are the Hasidim that oppose the State of Israel. As a Jew, they disgust me.
This ain’t good. This is from one of the more evangelistic sects of Jewish faith, and doesn’t it seem the hypocrisy temptations increase with a higher evangelistic profile?
If it’s any consolation by comparison, televangelists have done worse.
They do? Is it they think it’s too early, or what? It isn’t biblical Israel yet, but nobody is pretending it is, either.
Don’t confuse Hasidic with Haredi Judaism. Hasidic is the mystical branch of Judaism and focuses more on what the person feels instead of substance and knowledge of the faith.
Thanks for clarification on Haredi. But still are there Haredi Hasidics?
Grifting..an odd bunch
In common usage Haredi is a blanket term for observant Orthodox Jews
There are many sects of which Hasidic is but one
Some live in communal type towns and gritftng and bilking the govt is common...very common
Some have been caught Molly dealing....
Freepers see dressed up Jews like they do Sikhs....all good in their minds
Nothing could be more inaccurate
But...many Harddi are perfectly fine folks ...it’s just certain sects often controlled by a big rabbi and his family or inner circle ...cult like frankly
And yes some claim Israel should not exist period till their Messiah comes to earth....
And a red calf is supposed to foretell this.....kind of
They have some really weird customs and arranged marriages often to pretty danged young girls
I have had four best friends in my life....one of them is now an elder in an Hassidim sect in Israel run by a powerful rabbi in Monsey New York in a private village of their sect
It’s fascinating to be honest ...you should have been there when I visited
Leaving and talking about the not so positive side risks shunning
My friend left an existing family of wife and two kids at early 40s for this......he then married a near child and has over a dozen kids with her all arranged by the rabbi
His daughter eventually joined the tribe too
Crazy
There appear to be a bunch of Hasidim who facilitate their men studying Torah full time, through gaming the welfare system.
A lot of ugly politics, huh.
I guess cheating the goyim isn’t forbidden, huh.
No, they study both Torah and secular education. They also have a lot of kids.
We have a system of innocent until proven guilty.
Jews are forbidden to steal in Torah and secular law, so I don’t know where you’re getting that from.
