It’s always been curious to me, with his track record, how he keeps getting HC jobs. Maybe it’s the over the top personality.

I believe the reference is to the recycling of coaches proven to be mediocre. Happens in baseball too.

Losing twice to the Dolphins this year might have been the reason.
A big part, for sure. But I think the "icing on the cake" was the decision on Sunday with 4 minutes left in OT. Bills had a 4th and 2 and Ryan opted to punt the ball instead of going for it.

Never liked that thug Buddy or the kids he taught to be thugs.

The reason jerks like this hang around is because there are so incredibly few who can coach in the NFL.

"Defensive coordinators make crappy coaches."

Certainly not always. Tony Dungy and Bill Belichick have had a bit of success in the NFL (among others)

case in point:

Jack Del Rio

In 2003, Del Rio became the second head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars following Tom Coughlin’s (who won two Superbowls with the NY Giants)dismissal.

On November 29, 2011, Del Rio was fired as Jacksonville’s head coach.

On January 27, 2012, Del Rio was hired as the new defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos (who went to the Superbowl twice, won once).

On January 14, 2015, Del Rio was hired to become the new head coach of the Oakland Raiders, who are in the playoffs
for the first time in decades..................

It ain’t the coach,, it’s the talent on the field............

Musical chairs in the business world as well. Carly Fiorina? The other gal from ebay. The guy who took over JC Penney and actually made it worse. Business world is full of failed execs who take over another outfit and go back to the same failed playbook.

One guy that constantly gets hired is Lane Kiffin - he's had a string of failures/controversies as head coach (UTenn, Oakland, etc), now he's HC at FAU. I would add his pop, Monte as a DC easily - sharp guy.

"Look for the Colts to can Pagano...and hire this retread."

While this Colts fan would love to see Pagano go, Irsay just signed him to a 4 year contract at the end of last year. I don't think that would stop Irsay from firing him but he would need to know that he's got a replacement lined up that has some strong upside. The reason he didn't fire him last year was that there was really no body better to replace him with.

Why wait? Doesn’t cost anything, coach contracts are guarantees. Also you can start talking to unemployed coaches the minute you fire the guy you’ve got. And now they can start looking for work. Once you’ve decided to fire them might as well do it.

Add Wade Philips to your list.
Another former Bills head coach.

Google “Peter Hollis”. The guy was CEO of five different large retail chains. They ALL went bankrupt and out-of-business.

Good, bad or indifferent - the coach is the easiest to get rid of; makes a big impact; few repercussions if any at all.
To the contrary, today's player contracts have so much BS in them, they're totally protected.

The Colts really need to fire both Pagano and Grigson. If I had a choice of only one of the two, I would can Grigson, and quickly, before he drafts another Bjorn Werner. But I have no faith in the Chuck Pagano, the human cliché machine. Irsay needs to eat the money if he wants a winner again.

I usually don’t agree with Bob Kravitz, but he is correct when he says the Colts are wasting Andrew Luck’s career. They have no talent around him.

It’s a results oriented business. Also it helps placate fans, who are in the end the ones that pay the bills and tend to increase ticket and merch purchases right after a big change brings new hope. Now it’s true most teams are too fast on the hook, you really need to give a guy 4 or 5 years to really get his people and program in place.

You left the biggest loser of all -- Buddy Ryan -- off that list. But for each of those disappointments I could name several defensive coordinators who turned out to be very good head coaches (and better):

Bill Belichick
Bill Cowher
Tony Dungy
Jeff Fisher
Tom Landry
Chuck Noll
Bill Parcells
Marty Schottenheimer
George Siefert

We here in San Diego are sitting by the high speed news wire, if you are from San Diego you get it, directly connected to the Chargers offices for our belated Christmas gift, the firing of Mike”not the real” McCoy. An OC in the Norm Turner school of failure.

He actually did OK with a Jets team that wasn’t one of the most talented teams in the NFL. I was kind of surprised when they fired him a couple of years ago.
