Man Receives $128 Fine for Warming up Car in His Driveway
NBC Miami ^ | JANUARY 9, 2017 | K. QUERRY

Police often warn car owners to not leave their cars unattended while warming them up on the driveway.

Officials say leaving your car running is an open invitation for thieves who want to make a quick getaway.

But it wasn’t thieves who targeted Taylor Trupiano’s vehicle.

Trupiano, a Michigan resident, said many people have to warm up their cars for several minutes in the brutal Michigan winter.

However, he didn’t know that he would be fined for it.

After leaving his car running in the driveway for several minutes, he came outside to find a ticket on his windshield.

The Roseville Police Department gave Trupiano a $128 fine for leaving the keys in the ignition with the motor running and no one around.

WXYZ reports that there is no state law against leaving your car running, but several cities have ordinances against the practice.

My 2011 Cadillac warms up pretty quick so no need to wait on it, just start and go. My 2004 Dodge Cummins 2500 PU is another story. Since diesel engines don’t build up heat like a gas engine it takes me about 10-15 miles of driving at freeway speeds before I can turn the heater on unless I let it warm up in the driveway for 30 minutes. Last week when we had single digit temps it was brutal leaving work heading home.

In the Salt Lake area, dozens of cars are stolen every winter from people who think it can’t happen to them and leave their cars unlocked and warming up. Last week, it was a family getting ready to go on vacation to Disneyland. They had already loaded the car, including Mom’s purse with her ID and everything for their vacation. Were getting ready to drive to the airport, but thought they’d go back in the house for just a few more minutes to let the car warm up. Came back out, car gone, along with all their vacation dreams.

It is a city ordinance

Most city ordinance violations would bring a letter asking the property owner to come into compliance before fining. The article does not state if the owner was forewarned about his ordinance violation.

A stupid nanny state law, no matter what type of jurisdiction has enacted it.

It was impossible to lock the doors of my Ford Expedition if the key was in the ignition. I could leave them in the seat or the cup holder but not the ignition. I also loved the remote door code entry. I never took my keys out of it at work or play. Just toss them in cup holder and lock the doors and walk away.

Of course when it comes to “idling laws” I live in a red state, and when it comes to voting it is a blue state.

Got to love the name too:

I don’t get this. First, I live in New England, and it was 0 degrees when I came out this morning...nobody, anywhere, can tell me that jumping in, starting it and pulling out immediately is good for the engine. It cannot be, and it isn’t. That is just common sense.

Secondly, I am no shrinking violet, but if I can drive in a vehicle that is at 35 degrees when I get in, that is a hell of a lot more desirable than driving in a car that takes 5-10 minutes to get to 35 degrees.

Thirdly, if your remote starter is running with no key, putting the car into drive shuts it off without the key, and the doors are locked anyway, who in the Hell is going to steal that car.

This is the stupidest nanny-state, anti-mechanical legislation and article I have ever seen. Unbelievable.

I don’t have a problem with trucks and cars idling in some areas, as the exhaust in certain areas can be sucked into the building, but outside your house????

These people can kiss my ass.

The state of Michigan, or all other states, have no jurisdiction for what he does with his car in his own driveway. Its private property.

Just like those “Stop” suggestions in parking lots.
Its private property, so motor vehicle laws do not apply there, and no court has jurisdiction.

“But it wasn’t thieves who targeted Taylor Trupiano’s vehicle.”

I beg to differ, it certainly WAS thieves that targeted him.

If they're anything like me, they're not 'warming up' the engine. They're waiting until there is heat coming from the vents, because they want to be warmed up.
