Disney negotiating with Carrie Fisher's estate to bring back Leia

Kirsty Wark said on the BBC show[Newsnight]: "With what might be regarded as unseemly haste, Disney is negotiating with the actor’s estate over her continued appearance in the franchise. If Disney gets the go-ahead, Carrie Fisher will join Peter Cushing, who, last month, 15 years after his death, played a key role in Rogue One as Grand Moff Tarkin."

There was no more detail on what exactly Disney is negotiating with the estate: the studio may want to continue using Fisher's likeness on merchandise, or, as with Cushing, want to bring Leia back for Star Wars: Espiode IX, which is due for release in 2018.

As Newsnight pointed out, however, such technological advances come with their own ethical questions: just because late actors can be brought back to popular franchises, it doesn't mean that they should. There was no more detail on what exactly Disney is negotiating with the estate: the studio may want to continue using Fisher's likeness on merchandise, or, as with Cushing, want to bring Leia back for Star Wars: Espiode IX, which is due for release in 2018.

I thought Carrie had already seen the footage for Star Wars 8. If they are negotiating it is for the last film or she has a bigger role in 8 and 9 that will hurt the story if she is seen to have been killed off.

Another reason this (and any other) never-ending “franchise” has to stop!

How long do they think they can keep everyone alive to keep milking this?

This way they can give a young CGI Leia her own prequel.

I think acting may become somewhat obsolete. You could see it in the LOTR movies where Gollum was an important character, but only shown as CGI.

Humans will do voices (though perhaps not for long).
Humans will wear movement tracking devices so that the computer can capture them.

But the look of the characters will more and more come from a computer. And some beautiful, seductive “actress” may have a starring role for many, many decades. Why not? It’s cheaper and the public likes to pretend that people don’t age.

With continued improvement in animation to be more lifelike there may be no need for new actors/actresses. One option would be to create new John Wayne movies where you can’t tell any difference between a real John Wayne and the animated John Wayne. In such case, the estate would be paid royalties. For new “actors” there wouldn’t be a need for royalties but each would be copyrighted. It would greatly reduce the price of making a movie.

This just in, Her Maggots are being represented by Gloria Alred and suing for royalties. Obviously this is sarcasm because she was cremated.

And wasn’t Jar Jar Binks a computer graphic character too?

Might just be because they want to put out a Princess Leia doll. I’ve seen some buzz that a doll may be made.

I can remember when the best/worst this got was Hank Williams Jr. singing “There’s a Tear in My Beer” with his long-deceased father. That was just clever manipulation of decades-old footage though.

Marlon Brando predicted this stuff after he saw how they digitized his face while shooting “Superman”.

Sure enough, when they came out with the Superman reboot a few years ago, they included a digital Brando!

Well if they need her to show up in 9 that means she doesn’t die in 8 unless she returns as a ghost like Obiwan in Empire and Jedi. That’s it! The movie is ruined for me. :)

“I think acting may become somewhat obsolete”

If they are doing the moving, and the talking...and even facial capture with morphing technology.... then how are they not ‘acting’?

"Remember the dead and buried John Wayne selling Coors Beer?"

I do remember both John Wayne and Yul Brynner doing some anti-smoking PSAs...both were excellent.

They will at least need her likeness to appear as a force ghost- Obiwan, Yoda, Vader and now Leia.
