Just a day after the FCC skuttled its alternative set-top box scheme, Comcast Xfinity and Roku show why its not needed.
On Tuesday, the TV content supplier and the streaming TV box maker/service aggregator released a beta version of the Xfinity TV app for Roku. It offers Xfinity TV customers across the U.S. the option to also access their cable subscription through Roku boxes attached to TVs in other rooms in the same home. Streaming to the Roku boxes wont count against an Xfinity cable/internet subscribers data cap. The Roku devices, selling for as little as $29.99, also won't carry a monthly rental fee.

I don’t follow this sort of stuff too closely, but don’t you mean “cord keepers?”
Any $ incentive to do this?
It doesn’t matter as we will be/are cutting our Infinity cable and going to Roku and Sling.
later
People who dont have cable TV but do have internet or just over the air TV. With the Roku you can now get Comcast cable media content with just internet, Roku and a Comcast subscription. NO MORE CABLE BOXES.
YASSSSSSSS!!!!!
You just made my night!
Well....you and President Trump, that is ;-)
That’s why your post caught my eye. Comcast is my ISP, I don’t own a TV. I was wondering what this all means if I bought one.
If you have internet and are interested in any xfinity content you can probably get a basic channel package and NOT have to pay for set top box.
If the “solution” requires sending money to Comcast on a monthly basis, that is no solution. Comcast is as incompetent and leftist as they come.
I gave up all my Comcast equipment last month and don't miss it one bit. Equipment charges, taxes and other fees went up to almost $20 a month. A TV antenna gives me 60+ channels of free crap. Netflix and Hulu give me tons of commercial free crap to watch.

I wonder if the cable companies’ move to streaming is because they see net neutrality coming to an end. In such a world, you could charge more to get faster speeds for streaming content.
Bump
Will it work in Thailand? I have an apple box.
I tend to get wrapped around the axle with all this Roku/streaming/blah blah blah. Currently I have an Xfinity settop box for the HDTV and a smaller (3 1/2 floppy size) box for a 2nd old CRT-type TV, which doesn't get all the channels the settop box does - and none of the HD channels.
Am I to understand that if I get two Roku boxes I can drop both Xfinity boxes and still get two HD feeds? So I could upgrade to an HDTV and all the HD channels on both sets?
Gee, tonight, Comcast has cut my cable tv service. And a lot of other people, it seems.
That's not to mention the crappy internet service the past week.
A tiny step for the abused and exploited Comcast customer.
When I HAD cable, watching the absurdly useless hundred or more channels at more than one location in my home was the least of my problems.
Instead of 200 channels for which Comcast gets paid twice, give me the 10 channels of my choice for 1/5 the outrageous price and then we can celebrate.
Pa Dweller,
Your standard crt television is NOT capable of receiving, or playing HD content. Only wide screen LCD televisions are capable of receiving HD content...you also are required to have an HD cable box to receive HD signals.
BUT..the Roku box IS capable of receiving HD signals with HDMI. (and the Roku box CAN be played on ordinary Standard old CRT tvs as well..you simply have to get a Roku box that has the RCA outputs).
One of the newest Roku models is only $29.00.. not bad at all.. but Netflix and Amazon Prime are pay services.. but the good thing is that none of the pay streaming channels will cost very little, not near as much as Cable charges.
There ARE unlisted Roku channels that will allow anyone to receive CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, FOX NEWS, TNT, USA, and the CW.. (look on Youtube for videos that instruct how to install the “XTV CHANNEL” on your Roku...I’m currently watching “Rawhide”, “Have Gun Will Travel” - every episode, every season is there..there’s a ton of old tv shows from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s available to watch on XTV, for FREEEE.)
All one really needs anymore, is a great, speedy Internet ISP, a Roku box, and an HDTV set..you’ll have it made in the shade!
That much I understand. That's what I meant about upgrading. I was figuring on two Roku boxes and an additional HDTV to replace the CRT set. Then one could watch HD both places and not have the monthly expense of two settop boxes. In fact, no settop box expense at all.
Thanks.
