My father and I have a predictable routine when we speak on the phone, a not uncommon one around here in Massachusetts, it's safe to assume. After cataloging the well-being of various family members, the conversation inevitably turns to the latest on-the-field exploits of one Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. So talented. So handsome. My mother and I have a similar, albeit inverted routine of our own. There's one person we never talk about, if only to maintain a fragile semblance of civility: President Donald Trump.
Brady can relate to that right now. If there's one thing that can reliably be said about the purposefully enigmatic -- or boorishly obtuse, depending on your rooting interests -- New England Patriots quarterback, set to compete in his record seventh Super Bowl this weekend, it's that he really, really does not want to talk about Trump.
"If people want to take sides, you know, they can obviously do that," he said this week. "It's everyone's right. They have a right to do that. And I have a right to stay out of it, too."
But when it comes to Trump, no one can be apolitical. Brady's nonchalant neutrality is itself a political statement, one that says he's either too rich to worry about how Trump's whirlwind of chaos will affect his life or, worse, too indifferent about the rapidly diminishing prospects of those who are not. This isn't easy to say about someone I've idolized as an emblem of determination and athletic heroism for more than 15 years, but here in the reliably blue precincts of New England, Brady is already assuming a strange new role in the eyes of many fans: Tom Brady looks like a loser. Tom Brady looks like a coward.

Until LIEberal Fascists came along.
So everything is about Donald Trump now? The anti-Trumpers have truly gone insane.
I can see it. Patriots by 20. Robert Kraft thanking President Trump (just like Rooney thanked the new President Obama after the Steelers win), Belichick holding up his red hat in victory, and Tom Terrific just humbly giving his teammates and fans credit for a great season. Weeping and gnashing of teeth in lefty-nazi land.
“Until LIEberal Fascists came along.”
They aren’t fascists....they’re too candyass to be fascists.
What a stupid article. I didn’t get to the end, I have no patience for such libtard idiocies.
I am so sick of Liberals whining. Get over it! Grow up!
Huh?
That’s funny, I used to find it MUCH harder to root for Brady.
Actually, I have always been anti-Brady (never having a team to cheer for against him due to my unfortunate sentence as a Dallas Cowboys fan). Too good looking, too smarmy. But for the first time ever I’m cheering him on BECAUSE of this support for Trump.
Liberalism is a mental illness. These people are sick and so far out of the rel main stream that they actually think we care what they say.

Brady hasn’t called President Trump Hitler, therefore he is a racist/homophobe/White nationalist.
QED
I used to listen to music too until pedophiles like Michael Jackson came along. /s
As a Jet fan I can’t ever root for Belichick, the man who took $1M to coach the team then boogied to greener pa$tures
As a patriotic American I root for Brady.
Tom Brady is a fantastic fotball talent.....but if you’re that good, why CHEAT?????
Once upon a time a players politics mattered little or none as to who a fan liked or not liked. Now in the Age of Trump Tom Brady finds himself in the middle of a maelstrom because he plays golf with and is a friend of Trump's.
How shallow we have become, even more so, now that the sports writers have jumped in and brought politics into it also.
I am 61 and my Father, who passed away recently, were big football fans, Pro and College. At 93 he still enjoyed it, but had his complaints, my interest had been waning for some time. But we still enjoyed watching when were together.
Now, though, whatever joy I once had is about gone. Too PC, games too long, and now too political.
I just won't be watching the Super Bowl today and probably never again. Probably will be watching little or no Pro or College games much in the future either, it won't be the same without Dad.
I think, in many ways, the Golden Age of Football was the 1960’s and 1970’s. Great players and games. I would watch a cable channel that reran games from that era just so I could watch those guys play again. What memories.
If you can politicize the “climate” then you can politicize anything.
Another Hillary voter trying to make a buck off writing about President Trump. The media has been horrible about Tom Brady’s innocent sin, having a MAGA cap in his locker. They should be ashamed of themselves, but apparently the media is so lazy they can’t think of anything else to write about.
Actually, Luke, as a Cowboy fan I didn’t much care who won this year’s SB - UNTIL I remembered that Brady was a Trump supporter.
Now, it’s Patriots all the way, skipping half time and muting commercials.
