FULL TITLE: PICTURED: The internal medicine specialist father-of-five who was beaten and dragged off an overbooked United flight as CEO pens 'tone deaf' email DEFENDING staff

The passenger who was dragged from an United Airlines flight is 69-year-old grandfather Dr David Dao.

Footage of the Vietnamese-American being hauled off the overbooked flight at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Sunday caused outrage on Monday.

Dr Dao was heard in videos captured of his shocking eviction saying he needed to get home to Louisville so he could see patients.

DailyMail.com can reveal Dr Dao is a father of five and a grandfather, who specializes in internal medicine. Four of his five children are doctors.

His wife Teresa, 69, is a pediatrican who trained at Ho Chi Minh University in Saigon and also practices in Elizabethtown, Kentucky - about 40 miles south of Louisville.

Their eldest son Tim, 34, practices medicine in Texas; their second son Ben, 31, is a medical graduate; their daughter Christine, 33, is a doctor in Durham, NC; and their youngster daughter Angela, 27, is a medical graduate of the University of Kentucky.

So interesting to see such contempt for both contract law and the whole due process thing here on FR. (Yes I know this case did not involve due process but the attitude of “he got what was coming to him” certainly hints at such contempt)

The idea that abuse is justified because one dared to balked at being told they must give up something they are very much entitled to by reason of a binding contract is puzzling to me.
Maybe we could refer to this as the Mugabe option.

If United wants to “blame the victim” well two can play at that game!!!

Lock him up for delaying departure of an airliner by refusing to obey a lawful order to deplane.

What lawful order? Lawful orders arise out of unlawful behavior. Pray tell what was the unlawful behavior?

United Airlines has gotten lazy (and why shouldn't they?). Instead of negotiating for the seats BEFORE THE PASSENGERS ARE ON THE PLANE, United could have done it before boarding. And instead of negotiating with Faux United "vouchers" which are basically Monopoly Money worth about 1/4th of real street value (and can only be used on a limited number of red-eye flights), how about offering real cash plus a later flight? Bet you they'd have gotten some genuine offers instead of having to resort to the forced "computer" bumping. And if they didn't have any takers after the first round of "computer" bumping, have a second round - again, BEFORE BOARDING.

He had paid for his ticket. They were delaying the flight not him.

Good news in the future United will not have the problem of “overbooking” because people are shredding their United frequent flyer cards and ditching this airline.

Plus after this Dr Dao will own his own airplane and never have to ride commercial again.

Think it was you who told me about this yesterday. Tell me, exactly where and when do you spend this “Monopoly Money”? What is it good for?

Yes I agree they should give real cash or money in form of debit card. This would have got people off the plain faster.

There’s another Dr. Dao who has no such history in KY, and apparently that’s the man who was dragged off that plane. It appears that a lot of media may have just put themselves on the line for a defamation lawsuit, and a lot of anonymous internet posters should be ashamed.

“The press is not exactly known for their enviable research skills these days. So they got it wrong because to them making a passenger give up his seat must mean the plane was overbooked.”

I don’t make the news, just repeat what they tell me. If they said it was “overbooked” that’s what I repeat like a parrot. Was not there when it happened, to be truthful you could not pay me to fly.

They're vouchers. They're only good for a limited number of flights, and you can't use them online; you have to call their 1-800 number to try to use them. They'll tell you for which flights they can be used. The "value" they state when offered to someone willing to give up their seat is way over priced.

They're United Airlines; they don't care - they don't have to...

Oh, I did not mean to imply that you had made the news. I understood you were relying on what had been reported.

Just wow, that sounds like an awful headache. No wonder no one would get off, nor do I blame them now! Do other airlines do this when overbooked or just United?

It appears he was instructed, as authorized by the Captain, to deplane, and he refused to do so. If the captain’s order was lawful, his refusal to deplane was unlawful.

The captain also has to have a reason to request a passenger leave. That reason has to be one of those listed in the contract outlining when a passenger can be removed once they have boarded. To make room for non paying crew is not one of those reasons.
