The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings gardeners. Two days of solid rain. Just now breaking for a while, but predicted to get 2 more days. Very very cool outdoors, with lots of clouds and no sun peaking through. I am taking a quick break from trying to catch up on house chores, and decluttering/organizational project - an ever loosing battle.

Yukon gold taters not delivered yet, but expected at anytime. Not likely to be planted this weekend due to rain, but we shall see.

Hubby has a birthday coming up, and he has been wanting another peach tree. So we have decided to try one from Stark Brothers - Intrepid - dwarf, self pollinating, perfect for cobbler, but also good for eating, freezing, baking, or canning.

Catalog says that it is very hardy for zones 4-8 and that it withstands freezing temps even in full bloom with little to no damage. Ripens in mid August. As a surprise, I also ordered the book: The Fruit Gardeners Bible.

Harvested a bunch of spinach washed it and have it air drying before freezing for stir fry or dips.

I wanted to mention Arrowhead, who used to be a regular on this thread. He fell off a ladder quite a while back, and has finally succumbed. RIP-Arrowhead. Prayers up for his family and friends.

Hope all is well with you and yours. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Transplanted some of the starts outside. Seeds from the store peppers grow nicely, especially if fresh. We will see what they produce. Last year about 1/3 were chocolate peppers.

One of my store Roma seeds seems to be dying off (2) in a pod. Was growing real strong like the other one. Went droopy a couple days ago. I just pinched off the top and replanted the root to see if it survives.

Start up Danvers carrots had about 2-1/2 inch sprouts - put them outside for a sunny day and all sprouts died off - only very small and one or two sprouting now. Oops.

Have one small area designated - eggshells, some natural organic fertilizer (used veggie parts). Not sure what I’m going to put in there, now. Was going to put tomatoes but so far it’s unused (about 2.5 feet by 5 feet).

A light hail storm caused my young corn starts to bend over. Does anyone know if these starts will recover?

I’m sorry to hear about the carrots and the roma.

Sometimes it straightens back up. Sometimes you have to help it up a bit.

It’s so strange on the Roma - kept them inside - the best one is like 3 inches tall already. This guy hit 2 or 2.5 and drooped.

I gotta find something to put into that 2.5 x 5 soil, too. It’s just on the ground so I’m not sure. I have 14 of 16 Early Girl tomatoes sprouting in starters inside. 2 or 3 came up in the last few days and 1 slightly overnight. So I’m hoping for the other 2 as well.

I have a Bush Early Girl outside - growing well since rain and after I added bone-meal and veggie plant food left over from last year. Got a small planter with Sweet Basil - 3 plants looking good - outside - it was $3.50 at WM.

Do any of you have experience growing asparagus? I planted 20 roots and I think every single one of those produced nothing but female shoots so far.

Yes your corn will straighten up. I’ve had corn bent over more that 45 degrees stand back up.

I know this isn’t gardening but it is harvesting what gifts God gives us. In the last week to 10 days ago, we harvested more than 500 Morel mushrooms in a few small patches of woods in Missouri, not but a 1/2 mile from the Mississippi River. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Oh dear...it is so cold and dreary and wet today, I almost forgot that it is Spring!

Patience as it takes 3 to 5 yrs to establish an asparagus bed. After 2nd yr salt the soil and or use pre-emergence to keep the weeds down.
To wet here to do anything. 2 inches so far with more coming. I’m worried about all the tomatoes and peppers I have planted.

Is it possible that the Roma had damping off? That happens sometimes with plant indoors.

We have “volunteer” or wild plants not sure which. Hubby went and got some additional plants to add to it. Me? I know nothing about them.

Morrel was one of my Dad’s favorites. We have persimmons, butternut, black walnut, blackberries, and gooseberries all wild in our yard, along with poke salad.

80% of the plants in my place I got at John’s place of business. We went way back as neighbors, and communicated privately as I thought it improper to meet a married man to discuss FR and gardening stuff; I wouldn’t want my man hanging out with a local FReeper.

I picked his blackberries just yesterday.. he threw them over the high parking lot (we’re Hill Country) onto the drainage area his business sits on top of years ago.. big, shiny, and so sweet.

[damping off]

Had to look that one up. Saw no fungus or mold of any kind. Just bizarre. Hope the other one makes it. I think I have other Roma seeds planted. I’m a bit concerned about plants outside as we’re supposed to hit 38 tonight or tomorrow night. Then a couple days of 70 or so. But more rain expected tomorrow.

My sister’s band is playing tonight in a seaside town nearby. I was going to take the Harley for a lovely shore ride topped off by some fine Classic Rock and a couple of beers.

Now it looks like I’ll be taking the car.
